I took a spare Garmin on TD, didn't need it, but wouldn't have wanted to be messing about with my phone as a backup unless it was an absolute last resort. I've had my Garmin 800 die on normal rides many times, I was just lucky it didn't on TD. It did auto-delete the first days recording when the memory was full though, I should have backed it up, or saved to SD and switched to a spare halfway or something. Next time...
How big was the SD you were using? I wonder what the max size is? From memory (lol) I have a 4gb in the 800 and an 8gb or 16gb in the 1000 because the 1000 has bigger maps installed on it that take up almost 8gb by themselves.
