  • ^ yeah looks that way, huge shame really.

    In other news, key training events sorted & confirmed where booking needed:

    13/8 https://www.ldwa.org.uk/challenge_events/show_event.php?event_id=16262 23miles for £8.20

    2/10 self supported Mara on Mcr trails.

    8/10 most likely train -> Edale -> Todmorden -> train home as Canal Paths are still in a bad way from floods i'm told, plus terrain more fitting the event. Right to bail at Marsden (or even Glossop) reserved!

  • Game over for RY by looks of soshul meeja.

    What, conclusive evidence of cheating? Shame... seemed like a really nice guy when I met him.

  • It's hard to unpick amongst the trolllolol noise and pace of discussion, and therefore difficult to say it is conclusive.

    Seems that once some v.experienced Ultra Runners joined him for 5 straight days to 'keep him honest' the daily distances dropped and fatigue/injury kicked in.

    His effort alone over those 5 days is more than many would achieve, so chapeau to that.

  • Did a trail relay today, first race since Calderdale. Went alright, came second.

  • Experimenting in carrying just enough, have reworked my old drinks bottle belt with cheapo chalk bags to carry snacks one side and hold a gillet other. Worked quite well, not much bounce but may benefit from being stitched in place. Think a 250ml rollable bottle would fit nicely in snack pouch too for much longer/warmer training runs.

    Also been using the OMM 3l bag (kindly on loan from @andy_k) which is great for holding mandatory FRA kit aswell as other bits for easy access (as opposed to backpack) but overkill for training.

    Today 17miles at ave 138bpm miles 5-7 wading through knee high grass, itchy fun.

  • A fun multi-sport weekend. Ran my first 5,000m track race of the season on Saturday, hoping for sub-16 but happy enough to match my road 5k pb of 16:04. Yesterday, cycled to Brighton and back, 118 miles and felt surprisingly fresh by the end but there were a few more stoppages than we'd planned. Just the single puncture repair in a group of 9 on the way down, but fun and games on the way back; after a comical ultra-low-speed crash, Ted's rear mech exploded. I miraculously managed to utilise my extremely basic mechanical skills, using someone's pocket chain splitter and an allen key to convert Ted's bike to a single-speed which functioned well enough to get him to the next pub, but being still the wrong side of Crawley a few lightweights called it a day and ordered a cab. Three of us soldiered on, I rode home and ate a dirty pizza and some chicken wings.

  • Went for the first run in two years a couple of days ago. Just a lap of a local park to test the waters. Needless to say, it's back to square one, sort of.

    My calf muscles still hurt – in fact, they're noticeably more painful after two days, mainly the smaller muscle around the achilles – so I'm wondering if going for another light run might help or make things worse...

    Planning on doing a 4 mile run/jog over the weekend so want to be ready for that but not in loads of pain, either.

    Also, the fact I'm running in minimal shoes doesn't help. Fore/midfoot running strains the achilles more and it's easy to over-do it.

    It's a big difference from 2-3 years ago when I could happily bang out 18km with steep stuff on a whim. Not really looking to get back in to that but would like to maintain a baseline for cardio.

  • the first couple of weeks are always tough coming back. if it's just DOMS pain you should be fine to push through it, if it's more acute then take time to recover before your next session.

    stick with it and you'll be back in the swing of things by the end of july, maybe not as fast/far as before but it'll suck a lot less by then.

  • Yeah, it feels like DOMS... I'll try and push though it this evening and just keep an eye on things.
    Part of the reason for running again was to try and alleviate this weird pain in my right leg/ass cheek when raising that leg, seems to have helped a bit.

    End of July sounds reasonable. It tends to come back pretty quick and there's no particular rush or goal...

  • A couple of things I'd consider to help ward off niggles getting back to it. Firstly, try to run on soft surfaces as much as possible. Grass/off-road is good for a softer impact, but also being slightly uneven it can lessen the risk of overuse injury while your running tendons and muscles are re-strengthening. The other thing is cross-training; cycling, swimming, etc. will complement the cardio base fitness but also act as "active recovery". If you can mix it up, maybe consider running every other day initially, before building up frequency and length of runs.

  • ^ yeah when my calves are done in from running i find a day of riding my bike is fine instead and helps loosen them up again.

    doesn't work with dodgy quads or hamstrings though, at least not riding fixed.

  • London to Brighton sounds fun. I assume all the others made it as well.

    My legs felt stiff earlier so i did some time on an exercise bike, which seemed to do the trick as my 5 mile steady run this evening came out at nearly 6minute miling. time to hold things back ready for a half marathon on Sunday now.

  • Putting aside the tedious journey there and back*, had a nice run up to Lose Hill this evening, great views of valleys on both sides in the evening sun.

    .* decided I'd drive out there, after 1hr I'd done 12 miles, didn't get much quicker topped 19mph ave. How do people commute like this daily? >>>>>> everything wrong with motoring thread...

  • In other news had to skip morning run, and leg it home tight on time after work. Tougher session than 2x gentle plods for sure.

  • I fully messed up my scanning debut. I had the long queue that wasn't moving due to an inability to work the machine. A lot more stressful than running or marshalling.

    I had a few days off rob young due to anger and returned to see loads of phenomenal strava data. What a guy.

    On a train to Swansea for the Swansea Half now. No real idea what sort of shape I am in so it should be fun.

  • I packed my rucksack wrong ahead of long run, have scraped a hole in skin on my back as a result of it rubbing. Showering was eye watering.

  • What is the best aggregation site for browsing running events? RunBritain? The GF is trying to choose a couple of 10k races to train for.

  • I hope parkrun scanning gets easier.

    Swansea Half was another dnf. My racing mojo appears to have gone totally missing in action. Generally struggling with running, could probably do with a few weeks off but am committed to a marathon this weekend and track league the week after.
