E Clip looks like the thing, there was a spring conical like one from a QR skewer, might be able to nick one from the box.

It's not the same kind of spring as in a QR - it's a torsion spring you need, like the one in canti/V-brakes. It'd probably be worth harvesting bits from knackered old mechs in your LBS if you can.
