Dynamo Lights

  • Works without problem, but manual says it shouldn't be upside down if it's raining... but I'll insulate both cable entries in the lights. Also the beam is round, so no problem running it upside down or sideways.

I prefer to have it there to readjust the light if there is oncoming traffic or fast descents. But at the fork would work great anyway

  • Excellent thread, had a good read through most of it and just pulled the trigger on a little kit from cnc-bike.de. Was going to buy just one of their hubs (which are rebranded SP's) but stumbled upon an ex-demo complete wheel for €75 and some bargain lights so in total I got a dynohub wheel, F+R lights and cabling for about €120 + shipping. Too bad I have to wait all summer to get any use out of it :-)

I use dynamo lights pretty much 24/7. In last nights downpours lights were needed at 7pm as the light went all murky.

  • And lots of us carry on riding after dark, whether on a quick after-work trip to the A25 valley, a drink with friends after work or a whole overnighter to the seaside. At the weekend I toyed with the idea of swapping out the SON wheel for something lighter and then realised how inconvenient that might be.

  • Yeah. I'm a bit north of you guys but I'm sure I'll get some use out of it during the summer as well.

  • The LED in a modern Dynamo is supposed to last 10,000 hours, that's about 16 years of commuting. Given the negligible impact to my awesome power output, I run mine as always on.

  • Not sure if there's a dynamo electrics/charging thread so I'll just post here...

Is anyone with a PlugIII charging an Exposure Joystick (any recent-ish SPT versions)? Looking for real-world experience that it'll work, seems fine with my Kemo, but friend's having problems with his setup...

  • My b+m luxos u has gone mad overnight, seems the headlight still work but no USB power or rear light? I am in the middle of nowhere in Ireland right now. Plz help.

  • Hi
I had something similar, mine wouldn't shut off totally (mini top 'day' leds stayed on), kept switching modes, Rear feed stopped.

It's probably got water into the holes (yes, would you believe, holes?!) in the casing.

I would suggest removing it, and put it in a bag of rice for a couple of days. In the meantime can you buy a map, or just ride and see where you end up?

  • I'm on the transatlantic way race so had to come up with other solutions. Going to probs warranty the light when I'm back, but in the meantime I bought 2 portable USB charger things that are supposedly good for 6 charges each so should get me to the end of the race.
I've got a USB front light I can use for night riding but need to find a bike shop tomorrow to get a rear.
Apparently they're particularly vulnerable to water from the bottom.

  • ^Yep, underneath is where the hole is! One wonders if they've thought this through...

    Good luck!

  • Did 600km brevet without stops to recharge using for the first time, the combination: SP PD-8X dynamo hub + D1 Igaro Usb converter + GoalZero Flip 20 powerbank + Garmin Edge 1000

Garmin consumed two powerbank charges (just following a track and recording). D1 Igaro sometimes appeared to be too hot to be touched, even without any USB connection in use... but still worked great charging up the powerbank. No need to use lights and usb at the same time, but will try it before the 1000km brevet.

  • Pretty sure it's cause B+M assume you're only ever going to use it with mudguards. I moved mine onto my fork leg last week, should probably put some duct tape over the bottom actually.

  • I wonder if @acharnley will comment on the heat issue? Perhaps larger heatsink could be added if necessary or maybe it was lack of airflow? If it's out in the airflow it might be alright but I plan to stick mine in a top tube bag or frame bag. Thoughts?

  • Put the beers in the other bag.

  • I'm thinking of sealing all the seams & holes with a bit of grease - forgot to when I mounted the warranty replacement, which is now parked out in rain, gulp.

  • SP Dynamo can >>>>>>>>

    Not as robust as SON.

  • Have you had trouble with them you mean? I just got one up and running as the shimano one we had gave up.

  • Yes my D1 was inside the framebag, air temperature wasn't more than 20ºC but 2 of 5 times I reached to connect it, it was too hot... couldn't find any reason, wasn't very lucid without sleep either. Hope he has some idea why this happens... anyway it didn't stop working so its ok I guess

SP Dynamo is not as robust as SON, but both @CarlosBI and Jesse Carlsson used one to be 2nd and 1# in the TransAm and many more km's, so its ok for my yearly mileage :) for the price

  • you need to have an usb wire on, even if you don't use it.
It helps to low the heat

  • Neither of them will last forever.
SP won TransAm. That's good enough for me.

  • I'll remember that if I ever get the bike built.

    I'm looking at you Freeborn.

  • I have SON hubs which still run to this day, whether the SP Dynamo get worse and although still work, developed a lots more resistant.

  • The SPs already show less resistance than the SONS and are lighter and cheaper.
