I rode most of the route with a guy, Brad, from Minneapolis, he's 50, and rode singlespeed, he kept up with us fine, until he fell and fucked his arm pretty badly in northern NM. The gradients on TD are pretty gentle, and when it's steep, it's so steep you're walking anyway.
It's also less to go wrong. Saying all that, gears are nice on the long flat expanses.

Yeah, ride it if you get a chance. Touring it would be amazing too, but I quite like the buzz of trying to reach the next supply point that day etc and travelling light. Also, less sleeping in grizzly country. I sleep so lightly anyway, that out there, I basically don't sleep.
Stupidly I'm half considering doing it singlespeed next time. Just because.
