What tyres was he running? How did the wheel break? If you forget the spacer don't you just use the barrel adjuster to compensate?
-
• #1028
No idea, but he kept getting pinch flats. He bent his wheel when the bike fell over, loaded! He got a new wheel, then the rim tape was awful and kept slipping then getting more pinch flats. Not sure how he got it so wrong tbh. I'd run tubeless on that ride anyway.
I think it was a cassette spacer, therefore the cassette was sliding about on the freehub body. So shifting was all over the place.

Are Lael and Evan riding together? They were on the same distance this morning and still are now 30 miles later.
-
• #1030
Yeah.
-
• #1031
Mountain biker? Probably trying to run road tyres at 20psi while bunnyhopping everything :P

Sounds like TransAm bike maintenance is best if it's DIY.
Disc brakes <<<
Tubeless >>>One gimmick at a time :)

• #1033
Is that not frowned upon? I thought there was something in the TCR manual about 'paired riding' being bad for your rectum or something.
-

SPOT resolution isn't that accurate, they might not actually be riding together. I assume there's a "no drafting" rule unless you're riding as a pair. From what it sounds like they're just riding near each other...

I asked how she liked riding with Evan, since she’s never much liked
riding with anyone. She said it helped that the two of them were
riding a similar pace, and when riding within range of each other they
are loosely racing each other, more like a constant reminder to keep
the pace moving. It reminds me of the tactics employed by riders in
the professional peloton to chase down the leaders, except this race
is over 4200 miles on one stage. -

Yeah, no drafting. You ride side my side.
I don't really have an opinion on it. But if you did it in TCR, you'd get called out, and maybe checked up on that you weren't cheating.
Personally, being near someone leaves you open to wild claims. So say hello, then fuck off.I did talk with mike before about TCR, trackers and riding close. And people will notice.
I had someone try to draft me. I told there where I thought they should go, in very clear terms, becasue they didn't understand me asking nicely that they not ride on my rear wheel.I still remember, in the 2nd or 3rd hour from the start. I was just cruising along, happy as, and a fucking paceline (no joke) comes past me, 5 guys all drafting each other. I told mike about this after the race, because the rules had been ambiguous and misconstrued purposely by some people, to draft and gain advantage.

Tricky when you're similarly paced. I hate TTs where I'm near someone kinda closely paced. I pass them on the flat then they pass on a hill and this either repeats or I back off or go too hard. Either way it's annoying when you're trying to isopower an event.
-
• #1037
It won't happen. Or you might be near someone for a few miles and then head off.
Riding with someone for such a long period is deliberate. And imo support. -
• #1038
In fairness I just looked at the tracker, they're not riding together anymore.

...She said it helped that the two of them were

the pace moving.Sounds like she is saying they are pacing each other. Even if they are riding a mile apart, it would definitely be against TCR rules* but I don't know about TransAm.
*Other than on the first night: the way I read the TCR rules is that it is ok to ride from the start, through the night, in a paceline - as long as it breaks up by dawn. I don't think that is what is intended, and presumably if a group of 20 people hammered it across France it might not go down well, but that is what it says!
-
• #1040
1mi apart? That's close enough for aero gainz :P
-
• #1041
I'm staying on @skinny's wheel
At least until the 3rd or 4th incline or patisserie, whichever comes first.
-
• #1042
No that's wrong and the rule that was abused by people for gain. That is not what it says at all.
Drafting is not allowed, never ever.
However, on the first night, people will be near people, so it's hard to police and impossible ot tell via the tracker. So they will not be peanalising people from the tracker view.
It is not okay to ride in a paceline on the first night. It's cheating.

The Worlds last year were like that. Starting a TT with wave start is feckin' stupid. Three guys were drafting for ages.
-
• #1044
Either way. The paceline that passed me was fucking no where come day brake. And the guy that tried to wheel suck me, well he had to quit not much after.
Cheating scum.

Not having a go @frank9755 It's just something that irked me big time.
So don't draft.

The rules. Number 3.
Also, covered explicitly.

Might just be me, but TransAm rules seem to read in a disjointed way compared to TCR. Says it's modified from the Tour Divide ruleset which states
Advancing (forward) on the route by any means other than one's own
pedal power is strictly prohibited. No drafting. Use of any type of
air scoop or umbrella sail intended to harness wind power is also
prohibited. TD is a solo challenge, however, racing in the company of
other challengers is tolerated. Again, no drafting, and each rider
must maintain separate gear. But the only mention of drafting on TransAm is in relation to pairs (a pair can draft each other, but not other pairs)

So don't draft.
Completely agree - I wish he would firm up the rule and make it a bit more explicit that people can't run a paceline for the first 7 or 8 hours.

I expressed that to him in person when we met in January. Along with a few other rules that need to be clearer.
Feel free to post on the facebook group. Or email the race@... Anna is managing that.
But the rule is clear, it says no drafting. And it's not ambiguous about it. People just interpreted the rules in the way they wanted to gain.

In all the pics of them, they are riding side by side.
My friend Morgan has quit, last i heard he was getting shitfaced on bloody marys in Ennis, MT and then gonna hitch to Bozeman and work his way home.
He had on average about 5 flats a day, broke a wheel, then got a new wheel and the mechanic moved the cassette over and forgot the 10 speed spacer, and he didn't notice until shifting was all weird a long way down the road. Basically, he got all the shit luck :(
He's rightly decided that road bikes suck.
