  • But the drive/non-drive side with lowest drag is also going to have the highest sideforce (lift). So you have just disproved Felt's theory :)

  • The online course I did on sports aerodynamics is doing a webminar that looks interesting and it's open to everyone, so if you are interested just register ;)

    Dear MOOC Participants
In the past months, with a team of researchers we have produced quite a lot of new results in cycling aerodynamics.
We will present these new results in a Webinar on 29 June 2016.
You can register for it here
You can already read some of these results here
The Webinar will allow you to ask questions, part of which will be answered immediately, and part of which will be answered later (if there are too many questions to answer during the Webinar itself).
    Best regards
    Bert

  • Aero people. Any ideas how much time a 3 or 4 spoke front and disc rear will save me over a set of 50mm tubs in a flying 200m outdoors?

  • About 6 seconds.

  • @umop3pisdn haha!
Structural skin disc or spoked? Need for wheel stiffness would also increase in importance, relative to aero, when caning it.

  • @xavierdisley Someone on TTF said your ring would be available for me to purchase and then ride hard on the weekend from Wed? Can you confirm or deny this for me please?

  • warms up credit card<

Yeah I know it's kind of a dumb question, but serious answers would be appreciated.

  • Will either be a 10 year old Corima or a Zipp 900 (edit). Front wheel will either be a HED 3 or a Corima 4 spoke.

  • I have no idea. But it will scale from 10 mile TT times. How much are you losing sprints by?

  • It's not for racing - it's for a 200m tt. I'll use my FFWD 50mm wheels for match sprints as I want the powertap numbers and they handle well in all conditions outdoors and I can crash them without owing other people money. Will be borrowing wheels for the qualifying TT.

  • How much are you losing 200m TTs by

  • If you're borrowing them, then surely you'll find out your answer when you compare results to your previous times. Or am I missing something?

  • It's not so much a case of 'losing' (the fast guys will always be waaay faster than me) - more one of improving my time to qualify for match sprints etc. Outdoor pb is 12.24 in shit conditions at the moment - would like to go sub 12. Indoors I've done 11.7 or so (but not done a 200m indoors this season - should have shaved a couple of tenths off). It's hard to know where you are when doing 200m's outdoors all the time. Too many variables.

  • Outdoors. Wind. Air pressure. Temp. #badscience

In the end it the time will be what it is, relative to everyone else.. I was just curious as to what the potential difference could be.

  • You haven't been noting the meteorological values at previous races? Rookie.

  • Estimate - 404 vs. wheel cover, then use the 5g drag = 5million hours of time or whatever the rule of thumb is.

  • Well you're not going to be any slower with them. If they're not costing you anything then why wouldn't you?

  • Does it make more or less difference at a higher speed?

  • I'm bored and fantasizing about going really fast - I was just hoping for a nice, easy answer ;)

  • Proportionally more.

  • Sigh. Back to work.

  • Less drag but you're out there for less time so you get smaller time savings, or something..

  • Outdoors? You're not going to go really fast.

How's that for a nice, easy answer.
