And a new fork?
Then only reason I can think of that they do it this way is so they can lighten the steerer on the proviso that the clamp area is braced by the bung and top-cap.

My felt came with on of those massive bungs, as does the BMC Tmr.
No such instruction are given with either.
I plan to remove my extralite all together and use the space for a junction box. Using the Tharsis xc stem.

It's a clever idea. Most forks have a couple foot of steerer, and only 1 1/2" needs to be reinforced. So reinforce the whole stem, or just use a bigger bung.
I just can't see them under building there forks with faith in their buyers.
I mean I nearly bought an EVO. I would have burnt the manual, used anything too heavy as fishing weights, and built it up with polystyrene foam bolts.
Surely the Americans factor in idiots buying their bikes

Cdales stem cap is just an alu sleeve that braces the steerer under clamping force. A 3mm spacer on top won't kill you but I'm pretty sure for that tiny amount I'd just install as instructed. Mind you, I'm riding a 2005 Caad with a full carbon fork, star nut and cannondale bung/topcap combo as it left the factory. I'm not sure what's going to kill me first - the paper thin frame exploding or the forks...

Put the 'original' Si Stem back on, I had a shoulder operation 2 weeks ago and my 3T 130mm was a bit too agressive for me at the moment. I'll put it back on as soon as I'm healed.

Got a bit worried seeing all of this talk about having a special bung and how to correctly fasten it on a Dale. Is that special on all Cannonade bikes or just this?
I got a 2011 CAAD10 that I just bought a cheapo bung to fasten. Am now worried I'm going to die. Please advice.

What's the steerer made from? I think you only need this one for carbon...
-
• #535
It is actually full carbon. The bung I bought is made for carbon, but is not the SI one.

You'll be fine then.

• #537
Well, maybe.

It's not like he's bunged a starnut down there...
-
• #539
They always used the special bung / top cap thing. It's designed in. It might be why the fork is so light...
I'm not saying you'll die covered in poo and on fire if you don't use the proper assembly, but...

Nope, it's clean. New to this carbon-dealy. Cheers for that spotter.

Also: Cracking bike this! Want!

Oh no! Did you shove a star nut in it?

I wish! A particularly bad hit and run which ended up with me running into the back of a truck and a month in the hospital.
Such is life. Custom will come soon though (coinciding with recovery) and, with some S&S couplers, maybe the SystemSix is salvageable :S

Don't worry, I was kidding. It's definitely for the scrappy.

Yeah. They're very nice to ride on. If I were you I'd double check clearance before running the 25s on the SSix. 23s are tight in my(super6).
Sounds like the bung is a boat anchor that will punish you on climbs then suddenly kill you in the face with fire on a descent.
Buy an extralite.
