It doesn't sound like the policing is helping. First option appears to be tear gas and baton charges. I'm not quite sure what they were expecting.

BBC Newsbeat presenter Ben Mundy said police had earlier told bars in the Old Port area to stop serving English fans beer because they were singing loudly.

French police use tear gas for crowd control all the time, they did it to us in Paris when we were a bit slow leaving the stadium after the cup winners cup. Interesting stats from the BBC is that 1 England fan and 1 local have been arrested and no property has been damaged. Hardly sounds like the armageddon that is being reported.

From my experience of French police and football it seems they can't wait to go steaming in with the batons and teargas.
