  • Advice for turning a yard that is more weed than grass into a proper yard? Am o expected to pull hundreds of weeds? There's a sizable patch with nothing growing. A bag of compost and some grass seed?

  • Topsoil over compost for grass. Broadspectrum weedkiller may help.

Why not resod? What's the soil like?

  • What are you trying to achieve. If you want it grassed then you need to prep the soil now, and get grass seed in as soon as possible (grass from seed grows best in spring and autumn). Don't worry about weeding it, just turn the soil over with a fork, then rake it, then sow the seed.

  • Thanks guys. Goal is to have a nicer lawn, really. A lot of it has grass, just also lots and lots of weeds. I'll do what you've suggested on the bald patch, Andy. The rest, however. I'm not huge on the idea of coating the lawn with chemicals, but is there a particular weed killer that would leave the grass alone?

  • Choose grass seed to match your situation.
The best cure for weeds is to mow regularly. Any pesky thistle/milkthistle/dock can be individually lifted. If mossy then use a moss controller and rake over. Raking sand in, a little at a time will improve drainage, and gradually level. In the winter fork the soil to aerate.

  • Cool. Don't mind mowing. Thanks again, all.

  • The grass will suppress most weeds. Mowing it regularly, as @rive_gauche suggests, gets it to grow vigourously and it'll soon see off anything else. Grass has evolved to respond to being eaten by grazing animals, so mowing it stimulates that response.

  • Hmm. Maybe I should get a goat.

  • Guinea pigs do a good job and are easier to slaughter and butcher.

  • Garden's starting to get going

  • All the early flowering plants are done now. Waiting for the summer ones to wake up. Garlic planted in November is going well.

  • Started planting in the bed.

  • That is lovely work. Nice done.

  • ^^ +1, very snazzy looking indeed.
Looking for some balcony inspiration. Finally get keys to our new place new week. 5m x 3m balcony to play with. Looking to predominantly grow soft fruit and maybe a spot of veg with minimum of fuss and mess. Not that fussed about flowers tbh. Def getting some railing planters to retain as much floor space as possible.

Also, spotted this while bumbling around Ikea the other day, anyone have any experience with them or similar for salad and herbs? Part of me suspects it's a bit of a gimmick or a thinly veiled way of facilitating people growing weed on a tiny scale and nothing that can't be done cheaper/better on a sunny windowsill :/

In other news, my Manzanita seeds arrived; they look far too fragile and delicate to set fire to....

  • I've just moved house to a place with a massive roof that gets a lot of sunlight, there is a ton of scrap wood/planks/pallets in the yard too.

I've seen the recycled pallet herb/planters like this, anyone got any other ideas for what I could do with it?

  • It sounds like you might need the patience of a saint with those Manzanita seeds: 'Seeds may take a year to germinate' ???

  • Nice!

Did you do it with some membrane lining and a stapler? Also did you pot live plants?

  • I used rubble sacks (with holes poked in them for drainage) as lining and staple gunned them on. Mine has herbs in, just got to pick up a few more tonight and plant them and it'll be done. The half I have already planted have survived the last 2 weeks and have grown so must be fine.

  • Yeah kinda aware I'm in this for the long haul. Still, the seeds were only £4 posted and they sent 7, not 5 so that's something to feel positive about. Great read, thanks for the link.
But yeah, a year staring at dirt willing something to happen is daunting. If only everything was as easy to grow as raspberries/peas/weeds...
Through work I know a shit ton of gardeners who work for very picky/squillionaire clients so have also recruited them in the hunt for a living specimen in a pot. Surely somewhere there's a nursery in the UK with a few knocking around..

Some ace work happening in this thread, personally I'm rarely interested in any plant too small to climb/fall out of but getting super excited at the prospect of having a balcony.

  • Herb planter is coming along nicely. Just can't get rosemary or oregano anywhere to complete it.
