  • never seen a nice passoni

currently lusting after one of the chameleon / colourflip paint Sworks Tarmacs. Sram eTap and Zipp 404s and it would be dreeeeeeam bike

  • ^^ A lot of bike up there, but I think I'd take the Gios thanks.

  • You're wrong.

  • That's why they've taken all the reach out of the bars and run an inline post?

i.e. why have they turned the bars around so far that the drops are unusable, and moved the shifters right up the bars to kill the reach if they "need" that 140mm stem?

    It doesn't add up.

  • The drops aren't unusable though, they're level. It's not like they're turned down so far they're pointing up. They're no more turned down that on the E5 Sworks or the purple Tarmac Disc.

It all adds up if you wanted a bit of extra wrist clearance in the drops. The/my enve drops come back further than the hoods and they're not too far down or the 'aero' section wouldn't be flat. Look at Bobridge's Madone bars, they're not the standard bar and they're in the same position as the ones on that BMC.

  • Are we talking about the same bike? The ends of the drops on the little bike with the massive stem are pointing upward.

  • They're not pointing up though are they, it's just the badly wrapped tape and this photo make it appear that way.

  • I disagree.

  • Go and look at it on weightweenies then and you'll see they're not pointing up.

It's just the first wrap of tape is doubled over badly.

  • Compact drops end up pointing quite dramatically downward when correctly orientated, for e.g.

That chap has got the shifters way back on the bars, taking almost all the reach out of the bar/shifter.

He's either having to compensate for wanting a super-pro stem, or he's had to use that stem to compensate for his poor shifter setup removing the reach from the bars.

Or, his bars are too low so he's had to rotate them round that far to get to them, which has moved his shifters right back, which has meant he's had to push his stem out to compensate.

If the shifters and bars were in the right place I'd agree that maybe he needs that stem, but setup wise that bikes a mess, so he'd be better off with a 100mm stem and the bars setup right.

  • For how many penny?

  • Who said that's correct? You? I think those bars are rotated too far up and the drops are unusable. His bars are fine if that's how he likes them, mine are in a similar position and I expect I spend more time riding in the drops than most people. Show me a bike with bars set up the way you've just shown that doesn't have worn out tape on the hoods and fresh tape in the drops because 80% of people never use them.

  • Just as far down, with a 140 stem, yet I can happily ride an entire race in the drops but my bars are in the wrong position because you say so? How would you even know what some one you have never met or seen on a bike likes from their fit? Just because your preference is for a Fred sit-up and beg setup doesn't mean everyone else falls into your mould of zero flexibility.

  • Ah not for me but thanks for the reply

Your shifters are much further down the bars compared to the bike that you are defending, so that's not a great example.

Although that said your levers are a rearing back a bit - Shimano suggests that the lever be vertical. Had you considered a shorter stem?

Here's my Fred setup, I should probably add a basket:

  • I'm in agreement with @Dammit

That s-works you just posted, bars look ok but the shifters are pretty high up and are they also turned inward slightly?

  • Guys at Cyclefit in Covent Garden told me lots of compact bars are actually useless, the biggest example are Ergonovas.

  • Any detail to that opinion making it fact? I mean I suppose you could argue that having not much of a drop negates the point in having a drop at all but still...

  • It depends how they're set up. Lots of people try and have a flat top - hood section but bars like the Ergonova just don't work like that. If you have the ends of the bars pointing at the rear brake bridge then setting the levers right means they're slightly on top of the curve.

  • Is it not dependant on bar and brake?

My 105 equipped Giant is easy to setup with horizontal transition.

The Campag equipped Janssen however is not.

  • You're not getting the point, it doesn't matter where shimano say you should have your hoods. They should go where you like them, look at how many bikes have their hoods tilted upwards. It's because people like them like that not because they're trying to defy your logic, hell, Campagnolo even provide the ability to tilt your hoods up if you use their large hand adapters. If Volkswagen told you you should be driving your car with your arms crossed because that's how they designed it, would you? Also anyone's opinion about how anyone else should have their bars is irrelevant if they like them like that.

The levers on that bar are turned inwards as they're designed like that, and the lower you'd run the the more angled in they'd be because of the sweep on the bars.

Looking at my hoods compared to yours they're at a similar angle, I just have my lever reach wound in more that you do, again, makes no difference it only matters that that's how you like your bars. My hoods are at that angle because I've ridden classic drops for years and that's the position They're in on a classic drop, yet no one makes a swept out, aero, classic drop so I chose these bars because I liked the shape. I don't like having my hoods perfectly flat but that doesn't make it wrong, or anyone that does like them perfectly flat in the wrong. Bar setup is pretty much down to personal preference.

  • I have a pair for sells

  • Haha - where'd you get that from 😒
