  • Replacing a stolen bike and am sorely tempted by this at my local. Only thing is the Reynolds sticker is only on the forks, nowhere else. To be expected or? (more here)

  • Skinny Eric has a good rep on here, but you need to be clear about what the frame is (and isn't).

The paint is in good condition for a twenty-ish year old frame and the decal on the down tube is poorly applied and is obviously intended for the seat tube. Mid-Nineties paint tended to be quite "jazzy" and decals only on the down tube and forks is unusual.

I'd say it's been resprayed and the decals are just as likely to be what was to hand (and perhaps applied later), as having any relation to the bike's origin or tubing. Either way, Gomila is a bike shop in the Balearics and a quick browse makes me think they were more likely to buy-in frames and rebrand them, than build them in-house, which doesn't help identify either the builder or the tubeset anyway.

A 27.2mm seatpost indicates that the tubing is (at the least) a decent, butted variety. Expensive Campagnolo dropouts also point towards it being a good quality frame.

The lugs haven't had a lot of attention and the rear brake bridge is nothing exceptional. Is there a brass tube brazed between the top tube cable stops? The seat cluster is nice, but nothing that special.

All in all, I'd say that it dates from the mid-Nineties and has been resprayed. The decals aren't original and unlikely to be relevant. All the indications are that it's a good quality frame built from good quality tubes, but mid-range rather than top drawer.

I wouldn't buy a frame with the bottom bracket in-situ: if it's stuck, that's a world of grief. You don't know it's history and if it isn't suitable for your cranks, not much use anyway.

Stronglight A9 is a good headset and period-correct. But they're only £20/25 new: the latest A9 are superior to older versions, having sealed cartridge bearings.

  • Yep definitely can confirm Skinny Eric's being a good bunch, when i was in there (late on Friday evening) the bloke was helpful/straightforward AND also great at dealing with a steady stream of neighbourhood kids needing help with punctures (he often gave them allen key/pump and gave them few directions and let them see if they could work it out for themselves)

Anyway - thanks so much for your help here, massively appreciated the time and your insight!

  • I think it's a Raleigh

  • Nah, but seriously - looks like an R600, R700 maybe a repaint? You don't have a gear hanger on there, which could prove a pain to find or might provide clues as to what frame it is

  • That looks like a good shout. R600 looks similar, the 700 has a more square frame.

I've got the hanger separately at the moment.

    Thanks!

  • This crankset came with my bike. I'm fairly sure it's some sort of cheap copy of the Eighthinch spline system, but I can't seem to find any information about it whatsoever. Reason I ask is that the slots on the chainring which the splines fit into seem to have worn away, so when I move the cranks, there's a bit of play until it actually turns the ring.

Anybody know what the system may be called, and where I might be able to find a replacement chainring? Or is it worth just getting a new crankset, because this will probably just keep happening.

    Cheers

  • Far as I know those chainrings aren't made to be replaced, and are 'permanently' fixed to the crank arm. I would retire it and buy a new one, but I just might not be mcgyver enough

  • The splines on the crank don't look terribly square. so a new ring isn't going to solve the problem.

    Buy new cranks plz.

  • Hi,

I'm trying to put a year on this Mino Denti Master. Anyone got a clue? Mid eighties? Late? Early nineties?

    Thanks

  • Ah, so it's a cheap POS as I suspected. New cranks it is. Shake the magic money tree....

  • it's a cheap POS

At a guess, the OG manufacturer found they were shit and didn't sell, so flogged them off to Foffa-like enterprises to fit as OE on sweet-fixehs.

Considering the price of a second-hand, square taper chainset & BB, I'd turn this into an ashtray or a shrine to your preferred deity...

  • I need you guys help, bought this picture and I wonder if it is a replica or original? According to the same table is a Zeus ... I thank to new friends!

  • Hey, I was just given this bike by my father in law. It's a beautiful looking Claud butler, but I have absolutely no idea on the age etc. It's been sat unbidden in a garage for 15 years, it's in fantastic condition. Any help that anyone can give would be great. Photos attached

  • Late 70's - early 80's (?) Dawes with a weird stem. Does anyone recognize what model it is?

  • it's a Orbit from Sheffield, they are still going - contact them with the frame number (underneath bb shell or chain stay)

the frame clearances are close-ish, yet it has mudguard eyes, so probably an audax/fast tourer. Reynolds 531 is a good tube set.

The chain peg is a nice touch, the stubby seat stay junction with the seat-post a little inelegant.

paint job is quirky, but I find it attractive :)
