  • Chapeau Arup. I'm needing to crack the 400 this year

  • Well done! Good report too.

  • Well done!

  • Thanks. Yes, the sleep is the main thing to figure out. I think half an hour or an hour's sleep would have been perfect.

More than likely I'll do The Buzzard on the 9th as a first 600. Mainly because it fits my schedule and I have friends who live very close to the route where I can sleep in a bed.

  • Glad I didn't come across any reports of it being hard or it might have put me off. Saw the profile which looked flat and thought I'd do it fixed and have a crack at the fixed SR.

  • That would be great, thanks. I'll send you a PM for logistics.

  • Was the McDonalds there last year? I remember Barton Mills from the Green and Yellow Fields last year but it was an all night garage and everyone seemed to be buying milk. Route canal, ouch. Had a few of those.

  • I rode to and from the start on a few 300's to build up to it. I rode the DD a few weeks ago (as I would have missed the calendar event) as a perm and a night ride to prepare for this. Kind of helped but with a night ride you start fresh.

  • Saw the profile which looked flat and thought I'd do it fixed

I find really flat rides seem harder (on the arse) fixed as there's little need to get out of the saddle.

Luckily for you the Fairies Flattest 300 isn't completely flat, there are still a few lumps to get you out of the saddle every so often. It was my first 300 (on fixed too) and formed the latter half of my first 600 (I did 300km to the start it to make it into a DIY 600).

  • guessed that's why i'd missed sight of your ACH kit, and any others!

reckon the legs could muster another 800m of climbing on July 2nd, pending an early night on the Friday!!

ps., agree about the chain gangs, was a little surprised to see so many at the 8am start time, though did spot (and chat to) one of our own - @balmain - amongst the Chiswick folk, :-)

pps., is it worth posting up the 2nd July DIY Shark attempt as a ride in the Rides and Races thread, to attract a proper indy/audax vibe?!

  • Yes, very much so.

Just bought the PX as I didn't want to ride my c40 into the ground, so all audaxing largely will be done on that. Colnago has been stripped and cleaned and I am planning on getting @arup to rebuild my wheels on new rims later this year.

  • To be honest, while I'm up for a bit of company (hence the offer) I don't really want to turn it into a open event. I need the points and it is for my RRTY, I don't really fancy leading a bunch of underprepared fixie biek riders on what is a pretty tough route. I know you have done the distance before so know what to expect.

  • I did a ride.

TL:DR - it was really, really wet; really, really long; really, really hilly (in parts).

  • Great write-up! Looks incredible, despite the weather.

  • @radmich might be able to run it in time if he had to.

  • fair enough, well let's leave it as it is then,

  • Wow, that really was quite a ride. Enjoyed reading your write up.

  • Amazing ride and a good write up as well.

  • Looks like Tan Hill is off for me now. Front rack got jealous of the front brake and resulted in a pavement shoulder plant last night. Currently swelling up nicely and not much fun to move around :(

  • Oh and good luck @JB if you're still planning on doing that DIY 1000 this weekend!

  • Fuck that shit. I use midfoot as an excuse but that's similar reason to why I hate front mudguards.

How bad is the shoulder - not something Vitamin I can sort?

  • Yes, nasty.

I had a lucky escape a few weeks ago on the Oasts and Coasts. My TCR bike has canti brakes and I fitted some light mounts that go on the brake boss - as I've not got many places to put lights.

250km in, I was riding through a town and heard music from the front spokes - the mount had come loose and my light was heading into the wheel. Managed to stop and rip the thing off before it stopped me. I've got a couple of those mounts going very cheap if anyone fancies them...!

  • Oof. Heal up soon. Nasty business.

  • Taken a bunch of ibuprofen today, but moving is uncomfortable-to-painful depending on weight/direction.

Feel I need to get this out the way as some final prep for the Mille Pennines, but at the same time I'm a little concerned if it goes while wrenching myself up some of the steeper bits or ends up unable to get into drops/on the brakes etc. I can try and struggle round and potentially end up stuck somewhere pretty remote with one functional arm...

  • stuck somewhere pretty remote with one functional arm

Better than Shit Creek sans paddle but you know how bad it is so are best informed. Save your energy for the 1000 maybe?

Thinking about entering that but will probably change my mind about it half way through this Tan Hill thing...
