  • What's the deposit for one of the boxes? I'm just wondering how much of the food I could eat vs. losing the deposit to break even...

  • Deposit for all of the stuff is £150. And I got mine back in the end, so they may be a bit useless, but at least they didn't try to skank me!

  • Tempted to join them over my summer vacation. Do they care about riding brakeless?

  • Just go to the interview with a bike that isn't brakeless, but you're perfectly free to ride whatever you want when you're working because there's no one there to tell you otherwise.
If you do work for more than a couple of weeks you may start to regret brakeless though

  • They say that supervisors ride around making sure nobody is doing anything dim, and to make sure that your bike is up to scratch, but I never met anyone out there who'd ever been pulled up on anything. Yeah, don't try to do the interview trial thing brakeless though...

  • Hi I'm a reporter from the Sunday Times. I'm interested in looking into how Deliveroo treats its riders, if there's any training or safety kit they provide, and what safety issues you've come across. DM me or email josh.boswell@sunday-times.co.uk, or call 07795 640 690. Cheers!

  • @WillMelling You can see all my articles, including that one, here: http://www.thetimes.co.uk/search?q=josh+boswell

  • I've seen several deliveroo riders doing stupid things recently including one sailing through a red light shouting 'who stops a red lights wooo!!!'. It seems many shouldn't be allowed on the road. Anyone know the best place to complain?

  • Record their numberplates!

    No wait. Something like that.

I had a Deliveroo electric cyclist drafting me down a hill recently then shouting at me when I slowed for the bend. Its a bit much when you need to draft on an electric bike.

  • I keep seeing ads for them pop up on Facebook and it's funny because all the comments underneath are complaining about how awful the riders are. They seem to reply to them by saying that if you give them an exact time and location they can find who it was by checking the gps of the rider

  • May be interested to give deliveroo in Leicester a go during my long 10 week summer holidays despite being slightly put off by the thread. @sheffield-junglist what does the £150 deposit cover ? Just the box? Seems like quite a lot.

  • It covers the box, cycling jersey, t-shirt, coat, battery pack and handlebar mounted phone case

  • ...and the deposit is taken out via instalments every pay day (bi-weekly)

  • I've been grilling Deliveroo press office, they claim:

    1. They give a practical training session and a theory session for all riders, conducted by riders with Bike Ability training from the council

    2. They have supervisors conducting spot checks (but refused to say how many)

    3. The average rider makes 2 deliveries an hour (meaning in London you earn £7 basic + £2 for the deliveries + any tips per hour)

    4. Riders only work in a 2.2km zone during a shift, designed so that they dont have to cycle too fast

    5. They offer discounts on courier insurance for their cyclists through partnerships with insurance companies, but claimed they definitely don't take kickbacks/finders fees on those

    6. Cyclists get discounts of "up to 10%" from certain bike shops

Can any former/current riders tell me if these are true or not?
    I'm on josh.boswell@sunday-times.co.uk cheers!

  • oooooo a grilling!

  • Do you reckon I could eat my way through the £150 deposit before they realise I've stolen all their food? I think I've just invented the next forum competition...

  • Could you just make you own box and jacket and walk into places and grab food orders?

  • Just having a deliveroo t-shirt on gets you money off in all the restaurants that support Deliveroo

  • You sir have made my day!

  • In theory this is true, it doesn't always work. They are more likely to give you discounts if they recognise you from collecting orders.

  • starts collecting orders

  • Who does their training? Do they use borough cycle training schemes through local councils or fund it themselves. Planning to speak to tem about training in house cycle Training for consistency across the company (I work for cycle training UK)
