Ice got a picture of a bob Jackson that I spotted outside a shop in Cambridge....I can't find it now, but the bloody headtube was massive! And the bloke rode it round the world, apparently!

To be fair a Superstar Yardstick at 915mm, if we're talking keeping things in proportion to the rider, would be the only thing you should consider wide.
So in that case I need to cut my 780mm down to 700mm.

My SSCX have a 20cm head tube with 4 cm of spacers and headset, and still more drop than many roadbikes :(

Maybe I should plant my own forest, where the trees are further apart.

I'm thinking of Tom Bombadil from Lord of the Rings for some reason now...
Or is that Treebeard the Ent? I'm not sure.
-
• #407
Pete is definitely more treebeard than bombadil
-
• #408
Probably. I just seem to remember Tom Bombadil striding through the woods, that he might well have planted, being as tall as you like. So that reminded me of @BareNecessities comment.
But it's been a long time since I read Lord of the Rings so perhaps I'm not recalling it properly. -

Not sure if blue is my colour.

Well, Rohloff has been ordered.
Might have a lie down for a while now...

Makes my tandem hub look cheap!
-
• #413
What do they cost? I've genuinely never looked at them .. maybe too young.
I saw this which made me reach my credit card:

Works with a Sram shifter using this: http://www.bikerumor.com/2015/10/21/cycle-monkey-shifts-into-distribution-of-gebla-rohbox-for-standard-shifters-for-your-rohloff-hub/

A little over a grand for the hub, probably a bit cheaper if you shop around/buy in Germany...

What do they cost?
Just shy of £900. I've wondered about getting one for about 10 years, but it's only now that I've got a frame I think is worth putting one on.

I do seem to be at a stage in my life where I appreciate reliability.

Yeah, they look like a great idea for drop bar use. Possibly good for @Velocio 's Mather, but as I'm using risers, the grip shift unit will be fine.

Going to run a 42x17 set up, which will give me a range of about 20-106gi.
After grinding 55gi up everything and recently ( to my shame ) walking more and more hills, I cant wait to be able to ride up more stuff.

Will it take the torque?
-
• #418
It's within Rohloff's warranty limits for a 100kg+powerhouse/tandem, so I'm happy with that.
-
• #419
"100kg+powerhouse"
50% there
-
• #420
Ah yeah I see. Will you need a torque arm?
-
• #421
Brilliant range.
My fancey 11 speed Sram, With annoying special free hub, and boat anchor 10-42 cassette (mad expensive too). With a 32t Chain ring gives me 20 - 83 GI.This is part of what you're paying for.
-
• #422
Will you need a torque arm?
Thank the gods, no. The version of the hub I ordered comes fitted with the OEM plate.
Matt's ordered me a Rohloff-specific dropout from Paragon Machine Works, which handles the torque through a longer, slotted dropout.
Unfortunately they don't currently make a post-mount version, so it's back to IS mount + adapter for my rear brake.
-
• #423
The disc brake version of the hub comes with that ^ external gearbox, which makes wheel removal really simple.
Undo the little dial on the box-box slides off-wheel comes out, same as any other QR/vertical dropout combo.

That'd have me at 22-93gi.
Stupid big wheels.
