  • Has anyone ever got a tandem shipped eg picked up by courier?

Getting bug but in Northern Ireland...

E-bay sellers tend not to ship tandems and its a fair cycle to Liverpool ferry port :(

  • Use Shiply. When I looked into shipping my tandem from Holland to London, I was quoted about £75, which sounded reasonable.

  • Tx. Asked them for a quote but no joy yet. May take a few days, it's a bit short notice.

A box bike or a tandem for wee man would be great, I fecking hate the school drive some days. 40 minutes of misery, I can cycle it in that time. Though with him on a heavy bike...make that 60 ;)

  • Hi guys,
Would anyone consider renting their tandem out for a week or so to a pair of serious cyclists (not choppers). Something more modern would be ideal

  • What sizes are you both/ dates? Would need to confer with the stoker..

  • I've got one, if it fits you

  • Picked up a new pair of (second hand DT/Hugi) wheels for our tandem last week. Spent yesterday evening wrestling with a rather corroded axle end cap trying to remove a spacer for the drum, but they're fitted and I'm looking forward to freehubs and axles that don't bend!

  • Ooo, that spacer, I need one, as I removed the drum from our tandem. Any chance you would part with it?

  • Hmm... There are (very vague) plans for a rear disc, but that would mean paying someone to put in a the mount and brace. I'm inclined to hold on to it (for the exact same scenario that means you're looking for one!) but I'm happy to take dimensions for you? I might even be able to get one made up for you :)

  • not to worry, twas a cheeky request, I would hold onto it to. Is it just a washer? I don't know what it should look like, I assumed a washer with the same thickness as an arai drum brake. I think my axle is 12mm diameter

  • Indeed, it's an aluminium spacer that's a similar thickness to the arai actuator plate. I'll measure mine and PM you some details. Beware, the serrated steel spacer on the NDS has an o-ring on the inside diameter and it's liable to dry out and seize to the (corroded) axle, as I found out...

  • That would be great. Thanks

  • V Kind, thanks. It would be around 13th of August. A couple of 6 foot blokes.

  • So I got some new wheels for the tandem, some second hand DT-Hugi hubs on Mavic rims. 4 days in the Cotswolds taught me to carry spare star-ratchets, but they were otherwise great.
However, they're QR hubs and our Dawes has old-school semi-horizontal dropouts. It's a 140mm OLD so I can't find a decent (shimano) skewer that's long enough, and am not sure if Halo XL hex skewers will be long enough either. What is the hive-mind opinion on threading the steel axle and using some M6 bolts instead (as @mdcc_tester has demonstrated here)?

  • I need to get a tandem from Wiltshire, via Surrey, to the start of the Ride London 100 (Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park) in a few weeks.

Does anyone have any experience or advice? Don't say ride it there.

  • I have some monstrous roof rack tandem carrying carbuncle that you are welcome to borrow. I shall be using it for the first time in a fortnight or so after years of it rotting in the back of the garage, so will be able to update on its feasibility for use by the end of the month.

Went for a two-tandem pootle with @hovis on Sunday. It was good times. Image courtesy of stoker.

  • I just followed an eBay link upthread - the auction was finished and it gave me this as the alternative/similar item for sale: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bike-tandem-tandem-bike-/331852521600?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368

    Permanent uphill frankentandem, I guess?

  • Aha, that would be perfect! Grazie mille, let me know how it goes.

    What brand is this!?!

  • No idea, could even be custom by my tandem's previous owner. I remember it being a) heavy and b) crude.

  • Does anyone have any experience or advice?

  • @umop3pisdn, we hired a van with some friends to take our two tandems to the Cotswolds for the weekend. SWB Transit did nicely, unsure if a Berlingo would have the space (unless you removed wheels/folded seats?).

  • Mm, the stoker's father (tandem owner) has a biig transit, was just hoping to be able to avoid having to bring it into London. Might not be another way though.

  • Get yourself to a FGW station and get a train from there? Tandems are fine on the high-speed intercity trains, just book two reservations and find the platform staff in advance.
