For African safari, I would aim for something with a good zoom lens... Nothing is ever as close as you think it will be. By and large your subjects will be in the open and well lit, so high iso and superfast lenses are slightly less of a priority.
I also recommend buying a good quality spotting scope and a local bird guide :-).
Used to have a Lumix super zoom. Genuinely great little cameras with really long reach. Not so great in low light because of the tiny sensor but in good light, they're awesome.
