I'm yet to see a painted stem that looks decent.

aren't most modern stems painted?

You'd have to define "most","modern" and "painted". My money would be on anodised (with or without dye) being the majority finish on stems made since 2010, simply because of the huge numbers of BSOs and low-end bikes out there with cheap alloy stems. Some of the really rank ones have powder coated steel quill stems, so if you count powder as paint then it might not be a runaway win for no paint.

Fussy, faux-retro, wank.

Probably anodised
I doubt it, but definitely turd polish. Seems a bit silly to spend all that money tarting up a not particularly nice stem. The carbon spacer and top cap are a bit out of character with the rest of the build too.

I know it has a posh badge, but it's still wank, and the carbon spacer is too fat for the stem so there's an ugly step where they meet.

still the principal problem there fore me is the ugly stem (face plate bolts) i would love to see that work with an old generation 3t arx stem... think that´s the nicest modern stem out there..
