  • Only if it has Conti tyres..

  • Oh shit...

...but they are these non directional ones so I'll probably live.

  • Boom!

  • So, the SP Dynamo uses this push-fit connector:

Presume that means no soldering on this bit and it just clamps the cables on?

What's the best way to be wiring up the PlugIII or D1 USB chargers and the lights? Is there soldering required or should I be looking at a splitter or some more of these SP dynamo connectors? Has someone done this and blogged the process?

    Thanks

  • No soldering for fitting the cable with those, no. It's exactly the same as the Shimano one if you need impromptu spares btw.
As for wiring it depends a little on what lights you have, but normally you run the front directly from the dynamo and the rear runs off the front (B&M lights have a second pair of leads for this, I think Exposure do too). Run the Plug/D1 in parallel with the front light (the D1 explicitly tells you to do this), so in effect you take the two +ve leads from the light and charger and plug them into the dynamo, likewise with the two -ve/ground leads.
I've just ordered a load of these so I can chop and change my lights without too much faff - you might find that a convenient and secure way to change between the two chargers etc. They do need to be soldered, but you should be able to fit two leads into one connector, allowing you to easily make Y-joints for things in parallel.

  • Supernova Triple front and its matching rear light. I've not looked at how they connect to each other.

If the light cable is clamped and pushfit onto the hub, I presume there is little room for the D1 cable in the same connector? Or should I buy a spare 3x connectors and then wire it up like a splitter somehow so I can have the D1 and the Lights plugged in? Or just swap out the light for the D1 every morning/evening?

  • Supernova lights come without any fittings attached to the wires so you need to buy whatever clamps you need for your hub.

I would recomend those connectors for connecting the front and rear together so you can remove them from the bike easier.

  • Unplug before you take the wheel out.

  • I'm more worried about plugging in at this point in time. I'll cross the unplug bridge when I get to it.

  • Currently in Tajikistan with the D1. It's powering my Sony M4 aqua at 10.5kph. An Austrian friend with the Plug 3 has to go 15kph. Quite a difference on bad road conditions. Will have proper stats comparing the lot in a month.

  • Sounds good. I'm yet to use either so have no idea what to expect.

  • can anyone point me in the direction of the wheelbuilding specs for the Shimano dynamo hub I've just brought.

Dh-t785 which I think is branded as the dh-3d80 in the uk.

all I can get from rose bikes, is hole pcd: 70mm, Flange distance 52.1mm

need the flange diameter and the flange offset left and right.

If anyone knows the info or can point me in the right direction, would be appreciated.

Need to buy spokes and get this wheel built in the next week or two.

  • You can find the dimensions for the DH-3D80 here.
    Centre - Left flange = 20.5 mm
    Centre - Right flange = 28.5 mm

  • thanks for that, will take hub into lbs to confirm, but looks like I need 290mm spokes... and I may have some already at home.

  • Do you have some vernier/digital calipers? If you do then it's a pretty easy measurement. If you don't then it's a very useful tool to have and this is a perfect excuse ;)

  • Did my first 400km Brevet weeks ago with the the D1 of @acharnley, no problem with it in parallel with the Supernova Triple and Tail-light, but only connected the gps and phone after sunrise, charged really quickly the Edge 810, didn't record any timing but between 1-3h (between two stops). Still thinking about points of attachment with an screw, but inside the framebag its allright for now.

In the next weeks 600km brevet I'll use it with a Goal Zero Flip 20 powerbank with Pass-through Charging so the Garmin/Phone gets a constant flow of electricity

  • Having not seen my bike yet, I don't know if the fork will work with the PlugIII but I have one and a D1 too. So, one of them will work. Maybe I'll fit both and compare them (then I also have redundancy).

  • For me the PlugIII was a no go because of the installation needed for fitting in into the fork tube, and also the 4S disc doesn't have a hole in the bottom of that tube (hacks will be needed), also read some problems reports.

D1 doesn't have a comparison chart against PlugIII but claims to be more effective than the other options, plus its small enough to be stored anywhere in the bike with waterproofness in mind. But still would be great if you get to compare both in terms of effectiveness.

For me, being able to attach/unattach all the light&dinamo&usb system for a "normal ride" its a plus.

  • I have the factory fork so presume it's no good for me either, although it could just be bundled up and used outside the fork. Bodge-a-rama = drill fork.

I was going to send the PIII to the guy that makes the D1 so he could test it. Actually that reminds me, I was going to claim a cashback off him too, but I've not used it yet. What's his username again? I wonder if he's still offering it since I bought it when he offered the discount ?

  • For me, being able to attach/unattach all the light&dinamo&usb system for a "normal ride" its a plus.

I've not actually thought about that (quelle surprise). If I use it as a normal commuter I'll only have one set of wheels so I'll have to leave all that shit on for riding to work on. Fine when I have secure parking but if I move again I won't be leaving £3-4k worth of bike in the street.

  • This is my current issue, all my bikes are now too nice to leave anywhere ever.

  • I ended up buying the B&M USB Werk, as I knew they designed it to work in parallel with the lights I already had, and it was cheap. It also doesn't do the weird dropping of light output while it charges the cache battery, like it does paired with Adrian's Son Front.

I finished Bryan Chapman with my phone and Garmin at 100%, couldn't be happier with it.

  • I sleep with most of mine.

Reminds me, I should fuck off the Crackdor...

Think they'll be offering a dynamo fed/powered version also
