Need urgent(ish) advice on a build

Posted on
  • Need some help on a bike I'm building - had a budget of around £1000 for a mid level bike, so far I've decided on all the parts apart from the cranks and wheels. The frame is the 8bar krzberg V6.

I was considering Mavic Ellipse wheels, or downgrading wheels and getting Omnium cranks. Other wheels I've seen are the Halo Aerotrack wheels and these in the link at the bottom. Had anyone used them? They look fairly solid and light for the money, and would give me money in other places in the build. Any help is massively appreciated!

  • Not sure if this is the right thread. Any advice would be great!

  • Are you based in the US? Halo Aerotrack are solid, good value wheels in my opinion. No experience with the set you linked to. What do you intend to use the wheels for? If you are running a brake consider that the Mavics don't have a machined sidewall. That doesn't mean you can't use a brake on them but they might not brake as well as wheels/rims with machined sidewall. They might not look as pretty after some brake use either. For commuting I'd get the aerotracks, for track the Mavics.
Omnium cranks are cheaper if you get them from Germany

  • Re posted as a reply, won't work properly on my phone for some reason..

  • Did you factor tax and fees into your estimate?

  • Based in the UK, but the set would be £130 including postage to me. Looked like a good option as the 7075 aluminium is pretty solid, and sealed bearings/aero spokes etc, as well as fairly lightweight. They looked like pretty good value for money considering I may well upgrade but further down the line.

I'll be running a front brake, and mostly just street commuting use. Thanks so much for your help!

  • No I haven't actually, good point. I imagine for something around that value it would be about £30? (It was for some shoes I bought from a US seller, close value anyway)

  • Would also appreciate advice on alternatives

  • Have you looked in the classifieds for parts? You'll find that you are spending hardly as much for used parts. I try to avoid buying new stuff at all costs because as soon as you use it, it loses the majority of its value

  • I'm using the cycle to work scheme, so I can spend £1000 and get 40% off, so likely a better deal than used parts with the warranty etc
