• Everything there, check!
Heading up to Blue Door this morning for Joel to build it up!
Can't beat that feeling when 2 years of patina'd parts collection gets turned into a bike!

  • timelapse photos?

  • Would be a good idea. Ran into the first issue yesterday. Need to order a new axle as the 1007 doesn't fit without the drive side cup screwed in so far that you can't fit the lockring.

  • Right, so Joel from Blue Door cycles in Crystal Palace is progressing with the build nicely. The new axle fits and the chainset is on. Another problem however is that the tensioner arm clamp appears to be a slightly smaller diameter than the tubing. Either that or it's poorly cast. Joel's going to take a file to one side of it. Here's hoping! @ElGato / @Big_Block, did you have such issues when fitting yours?
Did they perhaps come in different sizes too?

  • Yes, I had the same problem.

I've lined the inside of the clamp with electrical tape to stop the metal from scraping the paint in the process.
I then used a longer bolt to slowly bring the 2 halves of the clamp together and once in place, I've replaced it with the original one.

    Filing could be an option.
You just need to get rid of the sharp corner of the clamp.
I've recently filed a Campag band on mech to fit on the Bates when I've encountered the same problem. I worked a treat.

  • Mine fitted first go.... well actually it fitted easily this time. But then it was just going back on the same frame in the same position it was on in the 1950s. So it may have required the fix back then.

  • Thanks gents, you've both been so generous with your knowledge on this build. Much good karma and forum love heading your way/s.

  • So Joel's one step closer towards towards finishing the build.
The dude's an absolute wizard with bikes. Go give him your custom. The latest problem he fixed today was to do with the rear axle bearing cones not fitting the hub, causing the axle to lock when the bearings were adjusted to eliminate play. This was because the outside diameter of the cone was such that it interfered with the inner surface of the hub shell. He replaced the axle and cones with a new one, and the hub rolls smoothly! Yay!
So the Osgear is together and working!
Just the truing the wheels, setting up the brakes, fitting the saddle, fitting the chain keeper device, and wrapping the bars to go.
In an industry that often struggles with communication, the Bluedoor seem to excel.

  • Wow that bottom picture is awesome.

  • I think the rear derailleur fork need to be set much further back for it to change gears. Have a look at the notes I sent you.
specifically on p38 Striking Fork Setting and Dropouts 'The gear change was optimised if the freewheel block was placed as close to the striking fork as possible, so minimising the fork-to-tooth chain span.'

  • Ah, cheers hadn't spotted that., I'll ask Joel to rectify. How does the chain length look to you. The above is just using one chain?

  • put it in the smallest cog at the rear and then compare the position of the tension arm with others including those in the notes. The big test is does it work?
remember to overshift then return the lever to the desired hole.

  • Thanks. It does work apparently!

  • That turned out great! :)

  • That's a sweet build!
    How does it ride?

  • Thanks gents, it's still at the shop and I haven't been able to collect it yet. Will pick it up on Saturday hopefully! Need to make a few changes to the Clubweight before Eroica too. It'll be getting new cable outer, a new BB as the other one has a slightly bent axle, some new tyres.

  • Yeah, that looks the business. Remind me, are you running tubs? If so, what ones have you go there?

  • Thanks!
    No, they're clinchers.
Tyres are made by a company called Vee Rubber and are heavily 'shed matured'. I like them so much I'm putting some on my other Hobbs too.
Found some more on eBay! Have always struggled finding decent 26 1 1/4 tyres

  • That look lovely, really nice. Very jealous indeed

  • ohh that's wonderful!

Yeah, they are just the 'right' colour. I like them.

  • So a successful eBay day. won the following!:
These will be going on the Ckubweight (the original build that my brother will be riding),

    1) Edco compressed Nitrogen pump. Bet no one will fill it for me! Comes with a Terry's clip!

    2) Carlton Tyre Savers:

    3) Another Bluemels spearpoint:

  • Nice pump. I watched that, I have the Pennine CO2 pumps. You could do a home based refill, but only after getting the bottle pressure tested. You going to get a second Terry's pump clip as shown in the advert?

  • You going to get a second Terry's pump clip as shown in the advert?>

I don't want it to fall off so may well do but the one that's currently on eBay is £25.00!

I would love a pennine or Lytaloy one. I'm sure you never will but if you ever decide to sell, I'd love first dibs.
