Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • I've just bought a pair of flare r2s. they were a kickstarter job that i wanted to get on, but didn't. i heard they were good, so i grabbed a pair that popped up used on a hifi forum i frequent. my mrs has commandeered the klipsch x10i and i can never be fucked taking the momentums on the train.

i've been listing to them all morning with comply tips and i am blown away by how good they are. the x10's were pretty good and take some beating, but these are outstanding. less bass than the x10, but the clarity and soundstage (poc) is immense. small and comfortable too (which was the best thing about the x10s)

never really got on with comply tips, so i am wondering how much they have to do with it.

  • Bought E10s - going in bin. As soon as there is any wind or I get about about 17mph the sound goes to shit and digitises. Checked other headphones, no issue. Think it's something to do with the cabling but I've tried as much as possible to shield it (cable runs inside my jersey). Sound is meh anyway.

I just want some earphones I can reply on not to break / be shit. Recommendations? At least the cables on Beats looks solid, surely I dont have to cave in do I?

  • .

  • I'm using some almost dead HTC buds at the moment but I want some over-ear sweat-safe headphones for turbo training with.

Sound quality not really important. Sound volume more important. Most important factor is they need to make me look like a total boss when I'm warming up. #pro

    Any suggestions?

  • So I went ahead and got the Aftershokz Bluez 2S bone conduction headphones. I bought them for about £45 from Aliexpress rather than £90 from a UK stockist. They came in a box marked Bluez 2 (the cheaper model), but having looked at pics and compared the differences, they definitely are the 2S.

They're really good. There's enough volume even when cycling and you can still hear what's going on around you. The sound quality isn't incredible, but it's surprisingly good considering it's using bone conduction to get the sound directly to the inner ear, leaving your earholes free to listen for traffic etc.

All in all, I'd recommend them.

  • I'm after so over ear headphones for using only in the office, I am no audiophile and priority is comfort. I'm happy spending £60, £100 less so. Recommendations?

  • if you don't wear specs, get the ones that go over the ear, rather than on, for max comfort. i have sennheiser momentum, which i love, but they are prob over your budget

  • Audio Technica ATH M50

  • seconding @rogan about ATH M50x

That said, if you really cannot stretch that price ( I paid $110, randomly they go for under $100 on Ebay etc... ) then the M40 are ok

  • I'm dying to get the Momentum Wireless headphones....

  • Which ones did you get? I can't see any on Aliexpress at that price.

  • why wireless? I doubt they are better than most wired/cheaper ones

  • Audio Technica ATH M50 or Sony MDR V6.

  • I've not tried the AT's but the V6 are simply superb cans. I like as neutral and balanced sound as possible which is exactly what the Sony's deliver. They're relatively light but well built, and comfy to wear for long periods. The only negatives are that the long cord make them a bit of a faff to use on the go and the faux leather ear cushions tend to start peeling/cracking, but that's only after lots of use and replacements are cheap.

If you're into a natural sound and will be using these stationary then I can't recommend them enough. I've got a pair of the MDR-7506 which were an upgrade but actually prefer the V6's....

  • Thanks. Looks like I'll have to get saving. Buying a house is taking g priority at the minute. Does anyone know set of very lightly used grado sr80s would go for? I probably still have the box.

  • Audio Technica ATH M50 got one until it was stolen... : ( the best i ever used price/quality

  • Just thought that as it's a sennheiser Momentum that the wireless would be better than that of standard wireless headphones. Am I wrong?

  • 380 quids!!!

i like the fact that they fold, but 2.5x the price to lose the wire seems a bit steep

  • Still no suggestions for over-ear sweat-safe headphones for turbo training with?

  • ... That's why I'm not getting them...

  • So what's the best (price point) wireless headphones?

  • you might as well just get the cheapest ones you can
