  • Anyone of you freaks self-medicating on daily dose aspirin?
Does it fuck your liver, kidneys or anything? Should I?

  • I read loads about the potential benefits of baby aspirin (the size of the dose is lower than a standard aspirin). I'd definitely consider it if I was at risk of an unprovoked DVT again, although I don't know all the potential risks.

I've read a few studies (this for example: http://archinte.jamanetwork.com/mobile/article.aspx?articleid=611391) that were looking at the impact of aspirin vs warfarin on post op patients risk of DVT.

From memory haven't seen anything on its impact after a DVT has already been suffered.

  • There was a big study that showed Aspirin taken daily by (I don't remember the age brackets) 45-50 year old people reduced the chance of death by a decent amount when they were 60-65yo but there wasn't a similar effect in other age brackets or something so being younger than that I'm worried that taking it is a waste of time or harmful. On the flipside being predisposed to clotting means I'd like to avoid another case of DVT and potential death...

I'd visit the GP for answers but they're as useful as tits on a bull in most cases.

Helps fight cancer but side effects...
"This leaves open the question of what people should do today, given the current state of research. Take a daily aspirin – or not? The problem with aspirin is that in a small number of people it is an irritant to the stomach, causing indigestion, nausea and sometimes bleeding. There is also a very small risk of a haemorrhagic stroke – a bleed in the brain. The risks, though small, have to be set against the likely benefit and have prevented its wider use.

Taken daily, aspirin cuts the risk of heart disease and stroke and has been prescribed for decades to people who have had one heart attack in order to prevent a second. But because of the bleeding risk, it is not recommended as a preventive measure against a first heart attack."

  • "For men starting on a low dose of aspirin at 50, after five to 10 years the results suggest that overall deaths from all causes would be 10 per cent lower, and the benefit would grow as the years advanced, even after aspirin was stopped."

  • On the flip side, daily aspirin could increase my chance of having a baby...

  • Got my prescription for 'prophylactic' Riva. Yay!

  • Thread resurrection.

I'm due to fly out on holiday 7 hours after a 12hr MTB race. 3.5hr flight.

Plan is to try to hydrate to the max, pop an aspirin and use compression socks. Anything else?

  • Pace up and down the aisle a few times

  • Drink lots of beer - it forces you to go to the toilet. While in the toilet, do calf raises.

  • I'm back on the anticoag.

  • that's not good news - reason?

  • Factor V Leiden, as above. I didn't want to start until after TCR though.

  • Anyone else on Xarelto/Rivaoxaban notice any joint pain?

  • Had a quick look in the BNF for side-effects. Pain in extremities falls into the higher frequency category. The 3 categories being Side effects, Less Commonly, and Rarely.

Worth a read if you haven't already.

  • I think I may have solved the mystery. :)

  • Has anyone here been on Apixaban and noticed a loss of fitness?

Admittedly my back has been playing up this past year and I missed much of my turbo training time in the winter, but I have felt like I have less energy after a while on the meds. Maybe psychological?

  • I'm probably on similar drug and I could say yes but more likely it's due to me getting older, fatter, brokener, etc

  • getting older, fatter, brokener, etc

Yeah, I do have these things in abundance too :-(
