Mercian Super Vigorelli

Posted on
  • Back in January i made the trip up to Derby to get fitted for a Super Vigorelli. After a bit of discussion on the type of riding i'll be doing on it (this will be my 'sunday best' bike and mainly used for trips round the suffolk countryside) we decided on the following geometry in Reynolds 725;

The 73deg headtube should add a bit of comfort over longer rides but still keep it feeling lively

Yesterday afternoon i got the call to say the frame is ready and im now expecting delivery next week.

Had decided in advance that I wanted to go mainly Campagnolo Record and have had the chainset, hubs, BB & headset sitting in my closet since christmas. Have also got a Victory (i think?) aero seatpost that should suit the build, although turned up a little more scratched than the ebay ad suggested (sorry for the crap picture, the bb & hs are with the frame)

Now just deciding on the final parts for the build. I'm tempted by a Concor in black suede as i have one on my other Mercian (1980 Professional, bought from benjybars on this very forum) and get on with it well, although i have a nicely broken in Brooks swallow in brown on another bike that i might try out when the frame arrives.

For the wheels im thinking TB14's in grey ano (with gumwall paselas for that 2012 look) although if anyone has any better ideas i'd be interested in hearing them. Bars and stem will probably be the Cinelli Giro & 1A reissues, have the old Giro's on my road bike and even though i prefer the crits aesthetically, i think i'll get on better with a bit more space before the bend. Haven't sourced a front brake yet although i imagine it'll be a recentish Record caliper or one of the monoplanar Chorus ones as they look great. I also have a set of the carbon Record levers that i got from the forum a while back but part of me is considering a Paul E-lever or something similar, if i go for that then they'll be back in the classifieds soon. Will post some more pictures when it arrives!

  • oh, and as for pedals i'll probably scour the net for some old campagnolo pista pedals so if you have a set in decent nick give me a shout. Really like the look of MKS royal nuevo's but as pretty much everything else is british/italian i might keep it that way. I should really just man up and go clipless but i've gotten accustomed to being able to walk like a normal human in the bits between being on the bike

  • so the postman arrived wednesday (excuse iphone pictures, and feet, will try to get hold of a decent camera once its finished)

Had gone for a metallic (flamboyant?) blue, with pearl white headtube and barbers pole. Super happy with the detailing.

wheels are currently being built at TFG, so once they arrive should be able to get it rolling about with a seat and pedals borrowed from one of the other bikes.

Still after a brake if anyone has a Chorus monoplanar caliper sitting about?

  • Lovely.

  • Love that barber's pole seat tube. Great colour choice too.

  • Great paint job

  • wheels arrived from tokyo fixed today

went for the silver tb14's rather than the grey ano as it should hold up a bit better with a front brake.

here's the bits id intended to put on tonight but im getting hungry. It is starting to look like a bike though.

  • Very nice

  • Very very nice! What tyres are they?

  • They're panaracer pasela's. Had some serious hassle trying to get the seat post in last night. Nearly tears before bedtime.

  • saddle options:
Brooks Swallow in Brown. Looks black here but its definitely brown. Have some shop credit to burn at a brooks stockist so could possibly go for a black one.

    or

    Black Concor

Or something else entirely if anyone has any suggestions?

Really difficult to get a photo once the suns gone out but the concor's the one i've left on it now which probably shows my preference

  • Lovely bike, go with the Brooks!

  • Whichever saddle is comfiest. Visually I prefer the Concor. If you get on better with the Brooks, then I'd say keep the brown and use your credit on matfching brown Brooks tape.

  • Brooks professional.

  • Concor looks better, but yes, whichever is more comfortable.

  • Very close to finished now, this is what it'll look like until I manage to get a brake for it. Having fun riding it without at the minute, and it feels absolutely amazing, but would feel a lot more comfortable having some assistance if i need to stop in an emergency

  • Looks very nice, i don't think this picture does it justice.

  • thats a stunner.

  • unfortunately iphone pics aren't really doing the paint any justice but its that or a lomo at the minute. Will try to get some better snaps

  • Very nice.

This is mine I've had her 3 years, bought second hand I have changed the Crankset to a Campag Record Track
