I'm having the same issue, sort of. I switched to 1x10 for TTing but couldn't find a cheap 53t 110BCD narrow wide chainring. I'm currently using a conventional stronglight TT chainring with ramps and pins etc. and have now dropped my chain in 2 out of the 10 races I've done on this setup (plus once in training).
I guess it's about whether you judge the risk of dropping the chain to be a worthwhile cost to whatever benefits you get from 1x.
I'm sticking with it for the time being but keeping a lookout for solutions (decent chain catcher/ Narrow wide chainring/ clutch deraileur) etc. but if it continues I may just switch back to a conventional 2x setup.
Hmm, I guess I've just never used the little ring, even at Hog Hill. Certainly didn't realise 1x was so risky for racing on.
