Is there any reason to show cardinal directions in 30 degree increments when the 12 hours on the face do the same job?

The Alpinist has an inner rotating compass bezel so they won't always line up with the hour markers.

That's a lovely, lovely watch. Beads of rice bracelet is valuable if it's original too.

Any decent watchmaker will be able to service that. I'd ask for an original crown to be fitted rather than a non-signed one.

Model is an Omega Seamaster circa 1950's. And it's on the wrong wrist. She may wish to ask to have some links removed if it's too big.

I've got a Seiko SNA411 with the direction markers on a rotating outer bezel but I generally just use the 12, 3, 6 & 9 markers for N, E, S & W.

Just always seemed a bit redundent to me.

But like I said, there may well be a reason for it that I'm not yet aware of.

You can figure out where north is from the sun and the hands and set the bezel to keep track?

That was my first thought but surely that'd rely on moving in the same direction.

ah - it's less keeping track, more that it's much trickier to figure out without the bezel.

Ah! That does make a fair bit more sense. Now I feel a bit silly for taking it off anytime I want to do that...
