it's more a case of who he nicks the goals against, seems to feast on the mid and bottom dwellers, and then comes up short (no pun intended) against the better sides, and international tournaments, no matter how much the tabloids like to puff up the english and belittle all johnny foreigners, the defenders in those national sides are better and defoe would likely have a hard time scoring against them..

Oh Spurs.

he's as out of form and fitness as Wilshire is, so not quite sure why he gets a pass, straight into the team...
If Welbeck hadn't fucked his other knee, I don't think Rooney would have smelt the first 11, now?!?!But it's not an england squad announcement if there isn't some talk of an experienced player/golden generation/world class??? being left out of it, being taken, and if he is taken does he play conundrum..

He gets a pass because he's the captain, regardless of form. Not sure the last time a fit England captain was selected for a squad but didn't start...

The 'top' teams have been underperforming/in managerial disarray for a few seasons... Perfect storm conditions for the Tinker Man this year... It is a brilliant story!

Rooney is being taken as the old hand that will be a father figure/mentor to the younguns in the squad, he'll probably get a couple of substitute appearances but I'd be surprised if Hodgeson actually expects him to provide anything more.

I know absolutely nothing about football, in case you hadn't noticed. And just to prove it, here is my team

I like that Rooney is now the quarterback. Like Beckham before him.

Inverted Full backs, next to stones in a back three.. you sir are a tactical genius.
Tottenham how do you do this time and again. When will we learn.

I'm getting really bored by the whole sport - money, drugs and more money, and just so much cheating too.>
Thank god pro-cycling is nothing like that.

Trying to use the picker thing just shows the dearth of English talent...and it's not like there's a load of good players not in the 26. The midfield look's lightweight on footballing intelligence.

He's short and not a CB

Hmmm, I was getting the same feeling. My best shot would be... http://bbc.in/1TVGhga

At the end of the day, your team won't win the tournament, mine won't but nor will Roy's so anyone can have a crack at it.

Isn't this about the time we get calls to lock the thread and start a Euro's specific one, before it all gets merged by Hippy and no-one knows whats going on.
-
• #128221
nah, with the forum all compartmentalised, only those who want to pitch themselves into the bear pit that is the football thread, will do..
also if we don't talk about it here, this thread will be a wasteland, apart from the odd transfer rumour, and manager fear... -
• #128222
Can't lock the thread, season ain't over yet.
-
• #128223
Why don't we start a new thread to draw in the international only fans and then just be really fucking horrible to them all until it gets merged back in to this thread and we can claim football thread bantz/TEH RULEZ/whatever

Punctuation not allowed.
No bee in my bonnet. I have enjoyed my team proving doubters wrong at every step (responding to a defeat/losing a player/playing a top side/etc.), but I don't think we weren't given enough credit - just look at the column inches around the world devoted to us.
Of course you would have taken third at the beginning of the season - that's irrelevant now though. You had us in your sights and blew it, you were ahead of your local rivals for the first time in a generation, with once game to go against a relegated team with 10 men, and blew it.
For the record, I would have been disappointed with anything but first from February onwards when we spanked Man City at their place. At the start of the season, I'd have taken 17th and been pleased with 12th. As the season progressed, we knew the top clubs were underperforming and this opportunity would be unlikely to come around again. Spurs were in a similar position, with a much better squad on paper, and fluffed their lines.
