  • Should we nip this in the bud? #brazilgate #earlycall

  • Cipo pic needs to become a deal with it.

  • no, they don't.

  • no, they don't.

Saying that Brasilians don't speak Português is like saying Americans don't speak English - good as a way of taking the piss out of their accent and dialect, but no more than that.

The sole official language of Brasil is Português

Title III, Article 13 of the Brasilian Constitution:
"A língua portuguesa é o idioma oficial da República Federativa do Brasil."

  • take it from a portuguese, they are not the same. it's not even a matter of accent or dialect.
same goes to spanish vs. catalans...
didn't mean to cause off-topic. apology.

  • take it from a portuguese

I take it from Brasilians - they think they are speaking Portuguese, their constitution calls it Portuguese. To a person from Portugal, it probably sounds funny, but lets face it, to a person from London the Berkshire accent sounds funny. Paulistanas look quizzically at Cariocas and vice versa :-)

In the family tree of Romance languages, Spanish is more closely related to Portuguese than it is to Catalan. The common ancestor of Spanish (Castilian) and Catalan split into the Ibero- and Gallo- branches more than 1000 years ago, whereas Brasilian Portuguese and European Portuguese were the same language in 1500 when Pedro Álvares Cabral landed, so any split is relatively recent.

  • Catalan and Spanish (Castillian) are completely different, your argument is invalid...

The language in my part of Spain, Galego, is halfway between Castillian and Portuguese... I can have a conversation with a Brazilian or Portugeezer and, apart from different inflections, they sound similar enough for me to understand them equally...

Argentinians on the other hand, that's not Spanish, guys... 😂

  • Catalan and Castillian cross over, just the crossover is different to the crossover between Castillian and Gallego and between Gallego and Portuguese. Catalan and Occitan cross over the same way as Gallego and Portuguese, by the same token. I can have a conversation with a Catalan easily enough, and I'm a sudaca in Catalan parlance. Although I guess living in Barna for a while helped.

The Argentines speak Spanish, they just speak it with an Italian cadence which throws everyone off except Italians. Written down its actually a bit old-fashioned...

I was kinda kidding but I find it very difficult to keep up with them sometimes... That said, I have the same problem with Madrileños... 🙃

  • Catalan and Castillian, Brazilian and Portugese

Take it from a Brit, we don't give a flying fuck ;-)
