• I'm having yet more problems with one of my wheels.
Bodge repair on the rim tape of a wheel failed at some point - I'd stuck gaffa over a bit. The sealant had loosened the stickiness of the gaffa, and eventually it came off. This exposed a spoke hole, presumably depressurising the tyre rapidly. This in turn meant the bead jumped off inwards, which took with it the good bits of stans rim tape, exposing more holes.
Now, is this a common problem? I've noticed the tyre bead catching on the rim tape when you push the tyre off before. Is there a fix for that? Not sure what I'm doing wrong really.
Anyway - gonna try my luck with gorilla tape this time. Will report back.
(q regarding gorilla tape while we're at it - one layer or two?)

  • Mounting the tape properly is a bit of an art.

I always clean the rims - with soap then with acetone - to give the tape a chance.

When I use gorilla I cut the tape so that it's wide enough to sit across the whole channel and then butt up against the side walls. So that it won't get pushed inwards with the tyre when / if it comes off.
