My solution for this is to always carry pair of 3/4 waterproof MTB shorts and knee length sealskinz socks.
Benefits:- Not boil-in-bag like with trousers. Yet plenty waterproof.
- Relatively easier to just pop on in a bus shelter when the rain starts. (People look at you funny when you mess about with trousers in public)
- Fairly easy to fold small and keep in a compartment in my bag.
- Not boil-in-bag like with trousers. Yet plenty waterproof.

BBQ advice
I’m thinking about getting a gas BBQ. They now seem to be pretty cheap, however, from reading a lot of the cheap ones sound shit and a false economy.
Is it better to buy a 2nd hand decent one?
My concern is a lot of the parts seem to rust/break so even a good, moderately well maintained 2nd hand one might still fall apart in a year or two.
Any tips or advice. I’ve done a bit of reading up online but haven’t actually found anything that helpful.
Cheers.

dont bother with a gas bbq, your oven and grill can do the same things
Grilling is direct heat
BBQ is about indirect heat
Smoking is a low temperature indirect heat, using smoke to flavour and cookGet a Green Mountain Grill wood pellet smoker which you can use for smoking, BBQ and grilling.

these are reviews of grills and not bbq's
(though most brits have no idea of the distinction between the two)

cut a barrel in half or dig a hole in the ground. add wood / fire, place dead things over it until cooked to your preference whilst drinking rum and coke. no salad.

All of of those are about using them to create two zone cooking. Calm down. I know what I'm doing.

but then they are just a gas grill or oven

Grilling is direct heat
BBQ is about indirect heat>That's interesting, because my understanding was that you had direct and indirect BBQing based on the type of food being cooked.
From reading though Which? they seemed to think that gas BBQs with the flavouriser bars / lava rocks burnt the fat indirectly and gave the same smoke effect that you get from a traditional BBQ.
Ill look into the Green Mountain Grill, but my initial thoughts are that I'm not really sure I want to spend $750-1,000 on an outdoor cooking device.

Which? don't know anything about BBQs.
James is right. BBQ is only indirect heat. Everything else is grilling. There is a time and place for both.

Seriously tho, the general consensus is don't bother with gas?

I had a cheap(ish) gas BBQ some years ago - always seemed to be too many or too few lava rocks, and issues with corrosion - enough heat to affect the integrity of the paint, condensation when stored, steel parts rusting when not in use, and some sort of galvanic corrosion where dissimilar metals were in contact, especially around the regulator. Didn't really get on with it for cooking either. Eventually bought a similar size and price cast iron job which I think allows more control by moving charcoal around and changing the rack height.
Gas might be good if children or pets are around - much quicker to cool to a safe temperature? -

I buy a new gas bbq every two years, cheap one, and let it rust. I use it every night in the summer and often for bacon sandwiches. Stops the kitchen stinking, gets me outside and reduces washing up. IMHO the food tastes better than using the oven due to the vapourised fat. I know "real BBQ" is loads better but ain't nobody got time for that with the number of kids I have.
This is the one I got, as good as anything from John lewis for twice as much.

wood pellet smokers have similar convenience to gas, but you can smoke, bbq and grill
charcoal and wood gives more "smoke" flavour though quite a lot of that is bitumen type oils from the coal, not so much from the wood that has been used for smoking. wood pellet gives a much more subtle smoked flavour with greater nuances from the different woods used.
You might if you spend long enough hunting for them, but I doubt that those Tensile/Point/Whatever ones are materially worse than Novatec so you might as well get them.
