Today I found out that trainers and cheap metal pedals don't work out in the wet; shoe and pedal not wanting to stay together.

Suggestions for good flats / straps please? Don't want to go clipless for this bike.

Yeah, he's denied all knowledge. Presumably he'd taken a break at some point. I'd made him a coffee just before I went out. Who knows? He had about 4 hours in the house by himself, he could've done whatever he liked.

Speaking of helmets: My Giro Savant has cracked and I'm looking for a replacement. My skull is quite long and narrow and the Savant fit lengthwise, but is a bit wide. Tried a Giro Synthe, which was almost perfect, but a few mm short. Any suggestions for helmets that fit long and narrow heads?

Is there an equivalent of U-Haul here? Moving next week, need to get a truck (maybe a Luton Van or something not much smaller). Looking at anyvan.com, but the quotes are surprisingly high. Just need a truck for a day if I can scam enough people to help me move the actual crap.

No. Annoyingly. You tend to find local hire places only. Best to rent it from near where you are moving to, so the return is less of a pain.

Will I be able to get a rim brake wheel in the fork of a disc frame for the purposes of just getting it home? Or will it fall foul of the caliper?

can you put a standard road hub in a disc brake road fork? Yes - yes you can.

Will the spokes hit the caliper? Yes - yes they will. :)

But I think @croft is worried the lack of flange offset on the rim brake hub will cause the calliper to catch the spokes. It probably will but you might be able to move the calliper to the other side of an IS mount to get more clearance if it does interfere?
