this is interesting. Do I need a special tool to switch out the spider? my first bike I havent put together myself so the inner workings remain kind of a mystery (hydraulics, press in bbs)

Yes - you need the Si crank lock ring tool, or KT012.
You'd also need the Si crank arm extractor tool or KT013
