If most of them have become vegan in the past couple years, then it's poser veganism. Simple as. If you didn't give a shit ten years ago, Dont pretend you give a shit now.Bandwagon jumping. It's more fashionable to not be a vegan as you're not succumbing to veganism just because other people are.
I bet the best part of being a vegan is pretending the food alternatives you should just leave alone taste good. Real vegans back in day wouldn't eat these shitty alternatives because they were real vegans and wouldn't actually want anything to do with a fake version of a food they're supposedly boycotting
Fakes fakes fakes
Disclaimer; vegan for 15 years xx

Meh, if someone is killing less then it's all good.

I'm of the opinion that if someone is trying, it's a step in the right direction and should be encouraged so as not to put them off.
I was a vegetarian for 10(ish) years and vegan for two of those. My partner has been vegetarian since birth and vegan (on and off) for a lot of those years. We have a wee guy now who's going to be raised vegetarian (vegan probably) and then be allowed to decide for himself.
The 'Fake' food to my Mrs isn't fake anything because she's never eaten the real thing. It's what it is, not an alternative just an option. But, the alternatives encourage meat eaters to move towards a plant-based lifestyle and that can only be a good thing.
One of my friends is a vegan chef (she's won some awards at VegFest etc - if you're in Glasgow, head to Mono) and one of her great achievements was a vegan donner kebab.

My problem with the substitutions are gustatorial, they taste like crap.
I have a vegan friend who loves tofurky, rice dream, daiya cheese, dairy free chocolate and a variety of oleos. Luckily we can still drink together. -

Rice dream is awesome. I don't mean to sound discouraging @johnnyhotdog but I hate this whole new world we are living in where people are seeing veganism as some kind of fashionable forwarding thinking movement, profiteering massively off it, or making people who use animal products actively feel bad about themselves, when in reality it should be as simple as "each to their own" I'm not up for this segregation and I don't think our food choice should define us...I'm also confused as to why people put vegan in their bios, usernames, even Tshirts sometimes. Food that hasn't used animal products for years had no vegan labelling (because unless you're a moron, it would be obvious) and the massive influx of vegan food alternatives which vegans did fine without for a long time, the repetitive, pretentious, unoriginal but still quite pleasant to look at packing only goes to make people roll their eyes even more.
Sorry

I was vegetarian for years and though I certainly never suffered, I really missed certain flesh-based menu items.
I still try to be careful with my food choices. -
• #19023
Yes, but for a lot of people, they're not subs.
Just alternatives.
-
• #19024
I'm not against people using alternatives, maybe my angst stems from me loving the idea of them, but not digging how they taste-I guess my point is, there are many naturally vegan items which are just amazing, enjoyed by vegans and otherwise which I personally find to be wholesome and tasty.
Think I actually read about that "vegan kebab" although impressed, I must admit I find it a tad absurd
-
• #19025
Absurd, yes. That was kind of her point. It's the most ludicrous dish available.
I totally agree with you (from my point of view) but some people just need the stepping stones to help them along the way.
