  • Cheers. Everything in the pack is on the bike, so no spares included. Will check out the guide.

  • I've used a 108mm bb, but also have a 113mm one. Is that my best bet to get a decent chainline with the chainring mounted on the inner side of the cranks (which was rubbing ever so slightly on the chainstay with a chainline of 41mm)?

Am I correct in assuming that it would be 2.5mm further out from the chainstay with a chainline around 43.5mm?

Or is 51mm (as it is now) fine for a 1x10 setup on what is essentially an MTB setup? According to Sheldon 52mm is fine for that.

  • I'm running a 113bb, 51mm(ish) chainline and 1x10 XT/SLX mix on my Troll, works fine and the chain angle isn't too bad at either end of the cassette.

  • Thanks for the info. Thinking about it I've got nothing to lose by giving it a go as is, not like I can take the 108mm bb out and get a refund if the 133mm is a better choice.

  • Drivetrain is installed. Deore mech went on with zero fuss. Just waiting for tyres now. Starting to think that as much as I love gumwalls that 35c paselas really aren't doing the bike justice. I think I can get at least 50c on there with mudguards so looking at some 2 inch 29er slicks, like these perhaps:

Also need to learn how to adjust disc callipers. The back one is fine but the front is dragging.

  • Are you keeping the old brooks?

  • No, that's just on there for the timebeing. I've got a couple black saddles that'll be on there when it's ready for the road.

  • please remove the decalz from rimz

  • Fatboy might be the best option from those, as much as I love the Soma tyres £50 a pop for the commuter is too steep.

  • Or these if you want to go super-fat. The only problem I imagine would be finding big enough mudguards to go over them.

    http://www.schwalbe.com/gb/tour-reader/schwalbe-big-one.html

  • They won't fit, max clearance with guards on the frame will be 50mm I reckon

  • yeah, it's a shame they don't do them in something a little more modest like 2.1". I may have to try them when I get the Vagabond up and running.

  • Quite keen for the fatboys now. Only thing I'm hesitant about is the total slick tread, I'll be doing a lot of wet commutes on this. I remember reading somewhere that the tread is purely cosmetic on a bike tyre and just there for reassurance, so it might have to be a case of faith in science

  • That'll be happening, have no fear

  • Paralysis through analysis on the tyre front. Desperately want some before the weekend so I can get the thing rolling but nowhere in Bristol has anything above 35c. However, I did find some 35c schwalbe road cruisers in gumwall, click and collect from halfords tomorrow at 1. Smaller than I want but for £16 a pop they'll do until I find something bigger. On the crest rims they'll probably some out around 39-40.

  • Ooh, didn't know you were in Bristol. Look forward to seeing this rolling around. Bike jumble on Sat, might be worth a look for tyres.

  • Is that at mud dock? I'll be riding until about 2 but could swing by later on

  • Yeah, is usually over by 1.30 though.

  • Should have known that Halfords would have fucked up. Only one tyre has arrived. This build has been cursed in terms of deliveries. Out of the 8 separate orders put in to gather all of the parts, 5 have either arrived wrong, the stock was not actually in the warehouse, or, in the case of wiggle, have taken 9 days to not despatch the item whilst maintaining they've already delivered it, despite royal mail saying they haven't even collected it.

I know, I know, LBS... but that would have meant this build would have been unaffordable.

  • Project is doomed. Time to sell the frame to me

  • Tredz have taken the biscuit with an order for a different project. Ordered item, they send faulty item, clearly used (torn packaging, scratches to item from on bike use etc) and even include the shitty letter and return form from the previous customer. When I complained they said they don't have any other stock, would I like a similar item that's much shitter, and cheaper, but for the same price? Jesus wept...

  • I've had similar tredz experience, never again.

  • Finally got the intended tyres on the bike this morning. 5 miles to work was an absolute joy.

45c tyres are coming out at about 43 by eye and a tape measure, and the clearances are fairly tight. Have got some mudguards that I think will be just about ok. Can always move the dropouts back a bit but that will mean an extra link in the chain which I didn't think about when fitting it. Live & learn
