  • Thanks! I may have to get another one for actual mtbing.. ;)

Going to take an offroad trip to manchester via wales in april. Then some more wild camping in the spring, with the eventual goal of the great divide or a trip around japan. It should be up to the task.

  • Look forward to seeing the pics of your adventures.

  • Awesome build!

Minor thread hijack... If anyone has an old Orange frame and forks in XL, I might be interested...

    :)

  • retrobike is your best bet. It's where I got this one :)

  • Orange clockwork, 19" on ebay at the moment.

  • Number 2 is my home town, hope you didn't try to ride across the harbour it can get very messy.

  • Whoa. Around Japan would be incredible. That's a dream trip.

  • You know, I was so pleasantly surprised by Minehead. It was actually really nice there. I thought Butlins would have destroyed it.

  • Butlins is a double edged sword to the town, a love/hate relationship. (for those reading, the harbour photo has what looks like a big white tent in the background, thats butlins stalag luft)
It's slightly more hate as they tend to focus on adult week enders, so cue 10,000 drunks from major citys around the uk coming here for a piss up. They tend to stick to stones pub at the bottom of town, the hairy dog half way up and wetherspoons at top of town, the other pubs are nicer as the drunks stay in the main drag.

You get away with a well cheap cable lock as well as most bike theft is unlocked bikes being nicked by drunks for a ride into the nearest hedge/wall/taxi.

But it's a good base for doing some light touring on the edge of exmoor, loads of audax riders here, the YHA up Alcombe combe is run by a keen cyclist (Andy) and very bike friendly, loads of road riders, mountain biking is more XC, few years ago the DH race scene was big here with regular uplift and races but thats died off.

  • Would you not be better spreading the load? Looks very rear heavy, depending what's in your panniers I guess.

  • Yeah, I have a sweetroll thing for the tent and sleeping bag at the front (which I totally forgot), and ideally I'd get a front rack and some panniers anyway.. But I ran out of time and money, and the bike actually rode fine and dealt with it pretty well. The main reason for spreading it out for me would be so that I could access things more easily. I'm not concerned for the bike after the abuse it took!

  • I love this bike

  • Bath Canal Path! Amazing!

Where are you camping on that third picture?

  • Nice bike. Like the bars.

I have an older Kona that I was thinking of turning into a cruiser by switching out the bars for something more upright. It already has a rack and guards and might end looking something like yours.

  • Missed this. It was in North wales.. near Conwy?
