Carry extra battery packs.
There are enough lightweight models available to keep you powered for the duration.
Or tell your family to HTFU, it is less than half a day.

Extra battery essential just in case. But gps shouldn't be too heavy on battery.

New model Garmins also should do this.
(I say should, because its a crap-shoot as to whether it works, being a garmin) -

Mostly I'd suggest that, unless you're going somewhere particularly remote and dangerous or you have a health condition that is likely to incapacitate you unexpectedly then live tracking for a day ride isn't particularly necessary. The reality is that in the unlikely event that bad does happen to you, by the time they've noticed and alerted the emergency services, they'll already be on their way having been called by someone present at the time.
It's way more likely that you'll go out of service area giving the appearance that you've stopped or stop for a mechanical. If they're prone to panic, you don't want them calling out the emergency services for nothing and potentially delaying response to a real emergency. However, if they are given to worrying and you expect to go out on long solo rides regularly, then something a bit more dependable such as a Gen3 Spot Tracker might be more for you. It also has the added bonus of a one button emergency alert that works on a global scale.

Yes, but that phone had an extra-large battery. I'm still using the greenalp tracker, and I have it set on the most battery-hungry mode (frequent updates) and it uses about 25% of battery per hour on my fairly typical phone. You can set it to be much more conservative.
Last time I looked there was no iphone version though

Just promise to send a message updating each time you stop?

if all they are interested in is your location what about just using the Find My iPhone app?

I've used strava live for like 4-5 hours on my iphone 6, but that was a bit of a stretch and the battery was close to dead. Might be possible with one of those battery cases you can get, with a stick on quadlock mount on the back.

Just get your family to use the Find my iPhone feature. Costs nowt.

Apple Find My Friends is by far the best option if you have an iPhone. Strava live track empties your phone battery, as does the Garmin Live Track (when it works as it's 50/50 if it'll drop during your ride).

When I'm on long rides, I send my location via Whatsapp whenever I rest to my SO (she worries). Works to within a few metres and doesn't drain battery too badly.
Hi all
I am going to go on a 8-9hr solo cycle ride and want my family to be able to track me for their peace of mind. What's the best way to do this?
I was thinking subscribing to Strava Premium so that I can get the "Share My Activity Status" function enabled so they can track me on Strava. The issue I see here is for 8-9 hrs I'm not sure if my phone will have enough battery using the GPS and Data (even with the screen turned off). I'm using an iPhone 6.
If this is not possible - what other apps do you recommend? I was searching and came across the Road ID app which leaves 'bread crumbs' for people to track you, however, the app looks awful with bad reviews - not sure if it's worth using.
Thanks in advance
