Include BB spacers during installation?

Posted on
  • I have a new SRAM GXP BB for my new 10spd SRAM RED crankset.

It came bundled with 2 x 2.5mm spacers: do I include these, or not?

The online consensus seems to suggests NOT as they're meant for MTB's only

However, if I install WITHOUT the spacers then I can't screw the non-drive-side crank on far enough....it's all loose and wibbly wobbly

So, I then try with a spacer on either side BUT this presents a different problem where the cranks get too tight and won't spin.

Finally, in the end I tried adding just one of the 2.5mm spacers to the drive-side and this seems to work YET goes against ALL advice I've so far found online.

I should also note that the older 2010 GXP BB it replaces, which I ran with a Truvativ Elita crankset, had slightly wider cups fro some reason. By around 2mm I'd say

Does anybody have a definitive answer for this?

    Thanks

  • RTFM. It comes with instructions, right. Read them, maybe. If it doesn't come with instructions, maybe buy a more expensive crank / bb that does.

You don't use the spacers. Using the spacers will result in you side loading your bearings and that is bad.

This bb system (gxp) has a floating drive side bearing. The entire crank and Axel clamps to the non drive side bearing. If it is wobbly, then the Axel is not being pulled against the bearing correctly by the fat nut. Investigate the fat nut, and tork it proply.

  • Nope, no instructions....SRAM can be hit n miss with instructions.

What crank do you recommend if not a SRAM Red?

What's more expensive than RED in SRAM's road going cranks?

Oh and my god you sound like a twat

  • Who is Axel?

  • Oh and my god you sound like a twat

    Bang on the money!

  • Turns out I need a GXP 'XR' bottom bracket.....apparently they're tandem specific! Why the fk was my bike designed with a tandem specific BB in mind?! Bizarre...

  • Normally, for gxp road cranks, the bb shell is 68mm, and you just use the cups without the spacers.

You should have got that, or something similar with your exceedingly expensive cranks.

  • They weren't 'exceedingly expensive', they were the usual Red sale price you suppurating baboons ass

I know what the problem is now anyway. Turns out the bike's 68mm shell takes the old size GXP BB with wider cups, called GXP 'XR'. SRAM changed their BB's in 2010, same year as my bike

Though when I search for 'GXP XR' on google all are sold as tandem specific. This despite the fact they look identical to my old stock XR

And you can keep your pdf, I have the hard copy bitch

  • Oh look this guy had same problem

  • Very interesting!
