  • I will do.

    In other news, I managed to fit the 42mm tyres on the Saracen Avro road bike;

@Chak the rear clearance is a tad more generous than the Slate!

  • @edscoble all this audax talk. do you even audax anymore bro why do I never see you at events

  • ^^ coooooool

  • The rear fit perfectly well within the clearance, now gotta wait for the 15mm thru-axles adaptor to fit my Hope/Crest front wheel on the Saracen.

  • Cause I'm picking up my audax bike on Friday as it is finally finish.

Lastly, I was unemployed for 5 months, and was overworked at the last shop prior to that.

  • AWESOMES.

Will I see you at any rides this summer?

  • Likely so now that I got weekend off.

  • Dude, that looks rocking! So much want. What pressure you running them at?

  • I pumped it up to 55psi to see just how much clearance I have left (pictured) so 35-40psi will be more than enough.

I welcome the lowered BB as it was a little tricky with a road-like BB height on some section with the original 700c 30mm tyres.

  • How do you find the Halo for reliability/longevity @edscoble ? Nearly bid on a set for the daily bike not long back, but thought it better to hold out for a set of Hope Pro 2 or perhaps a custom build on old Japanese XT 6 bolt hubs if I could find any...

  • Haven't tried it, price is good, weight is reasonable (under 1700g for 650b), and most importantly, come with a 11 speed freehubs body which isn't common on MTB wheels.

TBH it looks like a solid wheels, just gotta see how that rear hubs perform (the paw is the other way round inside the hubs itself, not on the freehubs).

  • The silver wheelset? Almost bid on them too...

I've got their 35mm wheelset on my 1x1, Rich (Keep Pedalling) has the 35mm 29er version on his Krampus. Both holding up great over the last 9 months or more. Considering a pair of the skinny 28mm rims for commuter build as I have a spare rear hub and want dyno front, would happily buy the wheelset if I didn't.

  • Cheers @edscoble it was a very cheap new set which quickly sold on the bay. Probably was the same silver set @andy_k
Might still hold out for a custom build though. Dynamo lighting for this winter coming I think...

  • I'm slowly getting my stuff together for my first 650B build and I'm looking at nice shiney mudguards, VO and GBs.
I'm aiming at 42mm tyres and wondered if I should go for 700C or 650B guards, is there any real difference given the circumference of the two?

  • Noticable enough, I had GB 700c 60mm on my 650b bike, but it create a big gap with the 42mm (less so with 48mm).

I recommend GB 50mm 650b mudguard for the perfect fit.

  • @edscoble, great ta very much that's exactly the info I was looking for.

  • Picked up some new 650b wheels earlier, Velocity Blunt SS to SP dyno and Hope Trials.

Out of curiosity I stuck them on my Straggler with 2" Marathon Mondials. Positioned at the front of the dropout, still plenty of clearance. BB height was 275mm. May look out for some lightweight slicks and give that a go another time...

    Super shitty phone picture:

  • 275mm is pretty high, could be fun with some slick indeed.

  • @edscoble Yo, what wheelset are you building for your Saracen? What rims did you go for?

  • Got the Halo Vapour 650b instead, very cheap and light for the money (under 1700g), also 11 speed.

Sadly, 42mm is less than a millimetre too big, it work but tyres never stay true mean it got some rub on the front (back is fine) 40mm G-One will fit, and 38mm Compass will.

  • 700c X 30mm Challenge Strade Biancha is 358g

650b X 38mm Compass Loup Loup is 354g, the extra light model is 333g.

So the wheelset and bigger tyres is actually lighter than the 700c and 30mm Challenge, meaning if people are worried about weight (and the Challenge are amazing tyres that feel fast and comfortable), they needn't to.

  • Shit, that is cheap. What's their internal width?

Can't seem to find many disc/bolt through frames that we (Evans) stock with decent clearance. I want 42mm for sure.

Was keen on the GT Grade but it's got the bloody swooping stays.

  • I think it's something like 22mm internal, got a nice rim tape included, can't find what I like in Evans' choice of wheelset.

    The Charge Plug disc series definitely can fit 650b, most especially the newer 48mm version as it currently got clearance for the 700 x 42mm tyres it come with;

  • Totally didn't think of the plug, thanks for the shout out.
Looking to build a wheelset, so options open up a bit. Stan's Arch on some Hopes would be pretty awesome...but noisy.

  • Anyone tried 650b on a kinesis tracer 1.5 disc fork? I'm assuming you can't get that big a tyre in but just interested.
