Presumably they're tandem-specific cranks, rather than adapted solo ones.
This is all new to me, so a quick search led to me to Sheldon (obvs) who explains the merits of crossover and single-sided drives well enough for even me to understand.

Tandem 2 has normal threads and a cross over, that's why I was confused
