  • The Ocean One is a great quality watch for the price. Nothing I have seen for <£500 comes close.

  • Exactly... I can get one for AU$500, fucking bargain... My Ocean Black DLC has been faultless (apart from the non-DLC bracelet), I'd have no problem shelling out for a sightly more dressy silver version... I've worn my Gothmariner™ practically every day since it arrived, not a scratch on it and runs like, er, clockwork... I'm doing all kinds of manual work these days, scraping myself up all the time but it still looks brand new...

Like you say, nothing else comes close at that price point...

  • Maybe a Smiths/Speedbird from Timefactors.

An Everest maybe, decent value for £250

I have mixed feelings about the new Black Shadow. I don't think I like it but I can't decide

  • The thing about Audemars is everyone knows they are amongst the best horological devices on the planet.

So they can afford to be butt ugly.

    Brand is king. (see heritage)

  • From wiki - 'On 6 September 1651 Oliver Cromwell's troops pursued King Charles II, the future king of England, Scotland and Ireland. To escape them, he took refuge in the branches of an oak tree. The tree became the "Royal oak" and a symbol of power and protection.[5]

In commemoration of this historical event, eight ships of the British Royal Navy took the name of HMS Royal Oak between 1664 and 1939. Gérald Genta took inspiration from one of them, built in 1862.[5]

One battleship was reinforced with steel plates, had octagonal gun ports for its cannons that were secured by eight visible bolts. These features served as a basis to imagine and create the shape of the watch case.[5]

The watch design and its steel case revolutionized the watch industry.[8]

When the Royal Oak was released in 1973, the idea of making a high-end sports watch in stainless steel was considered a high risk.[11] The Royal Oak was futuristic.

Its price and original design disconcerted the market.[11] Therefore, its launch was slow at the beginning. But collectors and trend setters began adopting the watch[11] and the Royal Oak became a huge international success.[12]'

  • Yeah, but those screw heads that can't be turned as they are recessed.... The engineer in me weeps when I see them. I love the Genterishness of it all, but can't get past the SCREWHEADS.

Give me a Nautilus all day long.

No, really, give me a Nautilus, please? I'll say thankyou so nicely.

  • Fuck me the Nautilus is ugly. 😀

  • I've had an Everest before. I really liked it but it is not as well made as an Ocean 1. Quite a lot cheaper though. I regret selling mine, might get another one in the future.

I really liked the Black Shadow until I saw the speedo numbering. It puts me off buying one.

  • On the subject of Timefactors, this is going to be released soon. Expect the price to be a shade over £1k.

Look at the swirl pattern on the gear wheels :O

  • Argh! I had decided not to get a Damasko, now it is in my head again.

  • Timefactors is a bit Aldi IMHO...

  • Steinhart Nav B-Uhr is less than £500...

  • That's just not an IWC.

  • Since I had the hand re-aligned I've become a big fan of my Steinhart Ocean Vintage GMT again.

  • U asked for an abdominal dessert watch, I supplied a beter exampal...

  • You won't regret, finish is excellent

    😇

  • A million times this.

Those fake bolts are utterly daft.

  • Don't think they are fake...

  • How're they screwed in? Hexagonal heads recessed in a hexagonal hole?

  • Magnets.

  • I think they're great.

  • So the slot on the face is purely aesthetic.

  • Looks like the watchmaker may use it for handling the bolts as they place them in the case, but I suppose strictly speaking they could do without them.

  • Think my OCD might set them inline instead of perpendicular. #FuckIt
