That's the problem with having so many characters. The books have even more characters and he ended up splitting the last book in two (characters divided by region/plot lines) just so it was a bit more manageable to write/read.
The TV series' have a pretty clear pattern now - 3 episodes where we just catch up with characters, 2 episodes where not much happens (lots of talking, probably some unnecessary boobs), 2 episodes where something really big actually happens, 1 episode spent dealing with what happened, 2 episodes to set up the next series.

i know they had to catch up with everyone to help recap the last series and move things forward but fuck it was tedious. it was like a series of small webisodes for each character where nothing happened to any of them.
