New Volvo XC90's handsome, which is some turnaround considering the previous iteration is the ugliest thing since the Lancia Ypsilon

All the people who have to get themselves pulled out of the sand dunes in the middle east, have driven the pseudo four wheel drives into places they really shouldn't and they're nearly always rescued/towed out by a Landcruiser or a Nissan.
The Defenders hold up pretty well to the dunes too.

You're right that a proper Range Rover is genuinely capable off-road, the Sport and Evoque much less so, regardless of tyres and wheels.
Just get the bloody Shogun, if only on the basis that my L200 hasn't missed a beat in 12 years from new and is absolutely fine off-road, despite the primitive rear suspension.

That joke never gets old.
Jokes aside, the land cruiser is a beast of a car. For a bit of nostalgia I'd go for a defender or a 70s series land cruiser.
