Android phones, apps and tablets

  • Just got my first reminder of this
    http://www.three.co.uk/new_plans
and to continue to get ultd data, I'll go from paying £12.50 a month to £20 and have to sign a 12 month contract.

Are there any better options out there now?

  • Marshmallow.

But if you have opted to use the SD card as extended internal storage (a marshmallow feature) it won't appear as an option since to the apps there is no external sd card, just a larger, slower, internal memory.

  • I got the EE £20 for unlimited calls/data and 16Gb data (although I think that offer has finished) after Three told me they wanted me to pay £26.50 for 600 mins, unlimited texts and data, instead of the £15.90 I'd previously been paying.

    Cheeky sods!

  • I opted to use the SD card as internal storage but I still have the option to move apps between the internal and external storage.

Those that are moved move everything, but some apps, including google music and plex don't have the option to move to SD so try and save everything to internal storage. It's not how I was expecting it to work when I read the descriptions initially.

  • Yes, but the moving of the apps is done by the OS which has awareness of the fact that the internal storage actually consists of two different devices.

The apps which run above that layer do not. They are simply presernted with a large, homogenous looking, internal storage.

Given that G Play Music has the impression of a large internal storage drive in which to store downloads, why does it matter that you can't tell it where to put them?

  • I have chosen to not use my SD card as internal storage since I would rather manage it myself and don't want any unintended performance impacts.

It helps that I am rooted so can have control over my system drive and remove unwanted bloat etc.

  • Well that's how I thought it worked.

That isn't how it actually seems to work on my Moto X Play. It makes it look like there are two large storage drives (equivalent to an SSD and HDD I guess) and for most, but not all, apps you can choose which to use. I think this is how it is meant to work looking at this webpage https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/109134/p/1449,9582 but the trouble is that some apps can't be moved to external storage and there is no longer an option to change where the storage is as everything is stored with the app.

The upside is that you can keep the most common apps on proper internal storage so they won't suffer from any slowdown.

After a bit more googling it seems this is a known problem with Google Music and a fix should be along shortly https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/play/CgNiUtLjC1I;context-place=forum/play

  • Is Three the provider of choice?

  • I just pulled the trigger on a OnePlus 2 which seems to fit the bill (1080p and 5.5" screen). I'll let you know when it arrives if you want to have a gander over some beers?

  • Three have shit all over their existing customers and are now just as expensive as everyone else, whilst not being very good.

  • Nice one, that was one of the others I was looking at.

Pulled the trigger on the Galaxy S5, dropped my monthly rolling contract in favour of a 24 month one which is about £5 cheaper. So effectively getting the S5 for £120 new, while sacrificing any sort of freedom...

Keep me posted on the OnePlus 2 performance though! It'd be good to see.

  • If you use a lot of data then 3 still seems a bit cheaper, albeit not as much as it used to be.

If you travel a lot to Feel at Home countries where you get the home tariff then it's definitely the best deal.

  • My Laptops died. My only reason to replace it With another Laptop is trainerroad really.

So might just get a tablet.

I'd like to wack a massive micro SD card in it. Probably want a 10" screen. What are the best current (non spendy) options?

  • Will trainerroad work on a non-windows machine?

  • They have an android app coming.

Its true. I read it on a 2014 posting......

  • I cant buy a fecking Laptop just for trainer road though.

  • That's why I don't Trainerroad. Doesn't work on Android (the android app is pretty useless) and doesn't work under Wine / Mono on Linux.

    Windows tablet?

EUR 313 for the minimum spec notebook from here

  • "Ideal laptop/tablet for children"

I'm short not a child. Remember the beard?

  • I was under the impression that the weird nordik rotting fish diet causes facial hair growth in children

  • Its worse. Its actually cronic nasial hair Growth. Just strategically placed.

How about something like a ....

    • Asus Transformer book T100
    • HP Pavilion x2 2-in-1
    • Lenovo Miix 300 2-in-1
  • Get a second-hand Lenovo ThinkPad T420 or T430.

  • I'm trying to use the Xperia transfer app but the phones won't connect. What's the next best solution to get the job done?

  • Its a lenovo Thinkpad thats died.

Its been dropped several times, had shite spilled onto it, and bits of it are hanging off. So I cant blame it. I'd definitely be happy With another one.

  • OK, Panasonic Toughbook, you ruffian!
