  • Sealskins waterproof socks for hiking in the wet. Worth it? I am looking at 3-4 days of walking through wet grass and would like to not die.
Any other sock suggestion? Less pricey would be also nice...

  • If it's wet grass and no streams/etc, I'd just go with a few pairs of good wool socks (whatever thickness you find comfortable) and some gaiters to keep the worst of the wet dew out in the first place. If you can pick up from Kensington/Kings Cross/somewhere in between, I have some gaiters I could lend you (if they're the right size). Edit: earliest pick-up will be tomorrow, as they're at home, in St Neots.

Or go with very lightweight trail shoes and quick-dry socks and sod the water. If it's really wet, waterproof boots & socks will just hold the water in.

  • Thanks for the offer, but as I'm not from London, that won't work sadly.

I can't wear gaiters with these shoes (flat sole) but they're well high anyway and from proper leather. Good leather grease should keep most of the wet out. Still, in my experience at some point the water just creeps through.
Wool socks are a must anyway.

Is it worth trying out these SealSkinz?

  • Only used sealskinz for cycling, they keep the water out alright, but once it gets in from the top, they also keep it in, which is great when water runs down your shins and into your socks when you're on a bike.

And your feet sweat a lot more in them I find, so might be causing blisters etc on hikes?

  • Best simple black bidon?
Best latex tube w/removable valve core?
    Best valve extender?

    1. I like Tacx Shanti
    2. I'm currently using Challenge with no issues
    3. No idea
  • which is great when water runs down your shins and into your socks when you're on a bike.

I should be able to avoid that scenario.

Thanks. I think I might try them.

  • Ah, I see. Oh well. Looks like you've had some advice from someone with more experience of them! Hope it stays good for you and the socks do their job!

  • what are the narrowest tyres I could safely mount on rims with a 36mm interior width?

Hmm. Sorry. Not an exact answer but might point you in the right direction.

  • A general guideline is that the tire width should be between 1.45/2.0 x the inner rim width.

    Out of curiosity, which rim?

  • You could go proper old school and buy a 1950s Everoak cork and leather helmet. They were manufactured to a BS so would still be legal.
Alternatively when it comes to the climbs walk it up with your helmet off.

  • A quick computery/lfgss website question:
I am a computer Luddite and change PCs only when they grind to a halt or break and I know nothing about them. I have a new one which I am using to type this. My question, which I am sure is a simple fix, is - the little boxes above my typing now will change colour when I hover the pointer but will not actually respond to clicking. What do I need to change please?

  • the keyboard operator?

  • Folding bikes: Is Brompton the way to go? Or are there other options worth considering?

  • Are you using Chrome? And does the computer have a touch screen?
    If so, you're SOL

Its a known bug with no fix on the horizon

  • Yes and yes. Bugger.
I'll have to do it via phone or tablet.
    Thanks

  • Not worth it, concept they sound great, in practise they don't work and are quite sweaty.

  • Ah, I've just worked out a solution, of sorts. Based on bothwell's post in the bugs thread, you can turn off touch input all-together. I don't actually use it so that's not such a bit loss

but instead of changing the option to enabled, change it to disabled

  • I am a known bug with no fix on the horizon.

  • I did the same on my laptop, it works.

Except on the Chromebook, I just tick the box with my fingers instead.

  • Over half a century old, made from a combination of tree and dead cow, and still legal for road use?

However it would be contemporary with the bike ... hmm.

Just realized - new page - needs a picture.
