Shedloads of regulations to comply with, a limited production market, and rapid obsolescence, so that if you need to replace a control panel you end up having to replace the entire control system and quite possibly the motor too. Plus, access is usually terrible. A lift 'refurb' may well end up actually being a complete reinstallation, with precious little original kit left.
