Been thinking about it, but as it already takes 38mm, and the max width of tyres the curved seatstays will accept is ~43 mm. 650x42 or such would bring down the bb too much (?).

Not that much, the 650b in 42mm is the same circumference as a 700c in 23mm, so if you want to test the BB height, simply fit a 23mm tyres if you can.
