I was going to be riding an audax that weekend but this sounds kinda interesting and different.
Not sure about my chances of survival given 1) my navigation 'skills' and 2) the almost certain lack of mobile coverage in Wales.

Sounds interesting - thanks for the heads up. There should be a fair bit of daylight by then trying to get through the Welsh clouds.

Interested in getting lost too!

It's great that Mike is trying to organise something different and I'm sure it will really appeal to some people, but it doesn't sound like my cup of tea.
If it's 400km, I would want to get round it in one day. I wouldn't want to sleep and spin it out into the Sunday. The after-ride parties could be great but the spread of times make it hard, and if you are back early, it won't have started (like the 8% beer after the Dean last Saturday - they hadn't got that unpacked when I got back!) I'm ok at navigating but I still like to know the route in advance so I can have it in my GPS and not have to worry about it. However, I do like the idea of some off-road options as that's a bit of fun for change.

If you're back early you get a head start on the beers! #cunningplan
I'd not be back early though, I have a hard enough time following a proper route, let alone one I have to make up myself.

Signed up. Anyone else doing it?
-
• #8
Any more details out yet? I'm still umming and arring about this.
-
• #9
Nothing yet but last day to sign up is tomorrow apparently but I imagine they'll accept people after.
I've also got no real UK camping gear at the moment so I'm planning to set out at midnight and try to finish before the last train back or try cycling back.

Why does it take 7hrs to travel an extra few miles?

I think it's this Tymawr Farm (I hope).
Planning to train to Carmerthen and then do a 2 hour cycle up to it. From London it maybe better to go to Aberystwyth

Would love to give one of these a go, unfortunately clashes with other plans and I'm away riding the weekend after...

haha woops. I guess there's going to be a few more grid references.
That now adds 2 more hours onto my journey too.

I am driving to Wales on Friday morning from Norwich if anyone wants a lift. If you can make it to Norwich, I can get you there and back depending what time you have to be back. Room for another bike and a person.

Never thought I'd see Ysbyty Cynfyn mentioned on these forums. I parked up there on a hillwalking trip a while back.

It seems lots of the Welsh trains turn into buses on Sundays. It says online that bikes cannot be taken on these. Is this the case in reality - if I turn up and ask politely will they let me on?

I'm doing the Buckingham Blinder 400.
I have enough on my mind without dealing with being lost in Wales all weekend. -

I've never managed to convince them to let me on a rail replacement bus/coach with a bike. No matter how cold, wet, broken, drunk etc.

This sounds amazing. Gutted I've only just spotted it.

Looks good but
ValleyCat No.2 will take you deeper in to Mid Wales to a place where vowels are an endangered species.
'w' and 'y' are vowels in Welsh.
Bunch of anglo-centric arseholes.
VALLEYCAT No.2 // YSBYTY CYNFYN
FRI 22 - SUN 24 APRIL 2016
http://www.valleycat.cc/
https://www.facebook.com/valleycatcc/
Valleycat is a cross breed of the Alleycat and the traditional Brevet. A long distance self guided ride over one or more days collecting images at strategically placed passive controls. Controls are only announced at the start of the event and riders must plot their own routes to them.
In Valleycat 2, the cat comes back; longer, steeper and deeper...
LONGER
Multiple controls locations across Mid Wales will be released on Friday Evening. Riders can choose; Get out there and burn the midnight oil or formulate a plan, get some shut eye and attack the beast at first light.
Ride alone or with friends. Its not a race, its a game.
Find the clocks and collect as many controls as possible. Minimum distances for all controls are likely to be in the range 350-400km so that's two big days out or one huge one.
STEEPER
Plot a straight route cross country in Wales and you'll be guaranteed to find some hard gradients. Around here you will find some of the most brutal in the country.
Controls may be placed so the quickest line will incur some effort but the route around could be costly.
Watch out also for the adventure lines, taking to the dirt could save you some miles.
DEEPER
ValleyCat No.2 will take you deeper in to Mid Wales to a place where vowels are an endangered species.
HQ for the weekend will be Tymawr (GR: SN 75742 79124), a traditional Welsh hill sheep farm.
Entry (£48) includes 2 nights camping and a meal voucher.
AFTERCAT
Camping and some basic nutrition are included and local ales will be on hand to help you start the recovery process. Signiture Eco Tees also available.
