Which Tyres?

  • I don't really use Conti tbh - I'm a Vittoria fanboy if anything. These are for the road bike. 20c f+r on the TT bike at the moment. It's a skinny person thing.

  • Frames and fork, some road fork is a touch longer (or the mount sit higher), some is so low that the shoes is set at the top of the arms.

For instance, Engima tapered road fork give slightly more clearance than the standard carbon fork that come with the 2015 Genesis Volare.

  • he changes his tune every 3-4 months... ;)

  • Conti can >>>>>>>>>>

  • We're talking about the same fork here. Columbus minimal.

  • How do the Marathon Supremes come up width wise? I remember the Marathon Plus were a fair bit bigger than normal tyres.

Also, any suggestions on the best place to get them. My googling is coming up with around £50 but there often seems to be random European shops I've never heard of with cheaper prices on tyres.

  • €35 from Bike24.

I recently ordered kojaks, as per amey's suggestion, from there and they were delivered promptly.

  • Details here would suggest they come out slightly undersize (measured 35 mm, for a 37 mm tyre). Other data on the same website show Marathon+ come out slightly under too.

  • agreed that marathon supreme are slightly undersized - but still great. I am using the 40c

  • After a new set of gum walls for the road bike. I commute and do weekend rides on this bike. I also enjoy my commute and it makes up the majority of my mileage so want something nice, if possible. I tend to use a different bike for wet days though.
Currently running wired Pasela in 28c. I like the looks and lack of punctures, but they are bit uninspiring. I want something that feels a little plusher, but with a bit of puncture protection, and not costing the earth.
The Corsa G+ are tempting, but a little steep price wise, and I'm not sure of the durability. If i'm dropping £80 on tires I'd like them to last at least a year (circa 5,000 miles). To early to tell based on reviews I suppose.

Top of list currently is the Continental GP Classic in a 25c. Cheapest I can find is about £37 a pair from Starbike. They are 120tpi, lighter, folding and include a bit of protection. I haven't seen them mentioned here though. Anybody got a verdict on them?

  • Shooting from the hip, but I'd say the Conti can >>>.

Whether they fold or not is irrelevant once they're on the bike.

Ten pints of Mild and a bag of pork scratchings says you won't notice the weight saving, but I'll go double-or-quits that you will notice the drop to 25mm.

  • Conti have a habit of using shitter rubber on their wire bead tyres.

  • OK, but I'm still twenty pints and two bags up on the deal.

  • If you ignore the need for that gumwall look, your choices of tyres will increase dramatically.

  • 1 hour crit on rough course gave quite a beating on the edge of corsa cx 25c (measures 28.2mm on 18mm internal) @70psi. But wonderful predictible traction - even sideways.

  • Thanks all. The more I look into it, the more I always come back to the Paselas. For the money they are hard to beat.

In terms of needing gum walls, I had some all black tyres on for a while, but they did diminish the sartorial elegance of the bike. Its a classic skinny tubed steel roadie so the gum walls do suit it really well.

Other options are Clement strada LCC, but in the cheapo 60tpi version. I've heard mixed reviews.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and go for the corsa's and see how far I get before they fall apart. Perhaps switch back to something cheaper/durable come winter again....

    hmmm

  • Not the Clements no.

Just get two tyres, one for fun, one for commuting.

Beside, didn't the gumwall disappear after a while commuting?

  • I've a pair of the clements you can have cheaply (£25), I found them to be fine just wanted something slightly wider

  • Cheers both. Price looks a bit more reasonable.

    Is 28" x 1.25" = 700c x 32mm? I'm confused why a european site seems to use inches.

  • Yes, 28x1.25"= 32-622 = 700x32c

  • Ummm, 28c in gum wall? How many miles ish. Collection in our fair city?

@Scilly.Suffolk is probably right, I'll keep the 20 pints for myself and opt to stay with 28c

@edscoble They don't look too bad. Rear gets a bit manky but a wipe with some degreaser on a cloth freshens them up.

  • yup, unfortunately in manchester. £4 postage. let me know if you want some photos

  • I think i'll decline your kind offer, thanks though.

Also, thinking of doing the exact opposite of everything described above...

Open Pave are £25 in evans for the all black in 27c. I've also got a £10 voucher, which makes them about the same as a set of Paselas. They could then act as a test set, durability wise, as I understand the corsa G+ wotsits are the Pave but betterer.

So not gumwall and not 28c....

  • I eventually decided on Challenge Strada Biancha's as my light-tour tyre for Holland. Fitted them today and they were amazing on the commute. So so smooth.
