Dynamo hubs

  • I like the velogical, but it's probably not for everyone.

If you only have one bike which needs a dynamo, get a hub. If you like the option of moving it around like I do (turning my fixed into a winter commuter then swapping it to my tourer for this week's Cumbrian camp fest) then it's pretty great.

I don't run anything apart from the lights, but I know it has a lower output that most hubs. Never bothered doing the maths to see if it'd power a charger.

  • I've had a shimano alfine dynamo on my tourer/commuter/off road/everything bike for 2 years and it has never disappointed. I even crashed into a bog of eternal stench on a honey badger ride where the whole bike was submerged and the hub shrugged it off.
I believe they will work with a plug3/sinewave type thing but I haven't used one.

  • Sounds good. Cheers for the recommendation.

  • is it well weather sealed? Thought I remembered reading that they weren't but can't find anything about it now.

  • There are obvious gaps in the body, but I've had no trouble. I think they say as long as it's the right way up it should be fine.

  • Got my d1.igaro.com today.

Just need a bike to use it on now...

  • If I wanted to run two tail lights from one dynamo (along with headlight, obvs), how would I do it, and what would the implications be? I.e. make all the lights a bit dimmer?

  • You'd run two lights in parallel (ie match up all the black and white cables) off the tails coming from the front light. You probably won't find it much darker as the dynamo can provide much more power than the lights can use once you're above low speeds.

  • You can run two headlights off a dynamo so two tail lights is a cinch.

  • @Skülly Danke. Kinda think having a secondary light on the seatpost, as well as the big one on the mudguard, would be worthwhile.

Maybe something like these little guys

  • My Shimano Nexus hub has been on my pub bike for a year. On my bosses pub bike for a few years before that and go knows where prior. My boss kept it outside. I leave it at the station all day. Never serviced. Never misses a beat.

  • I'm after multiple products for efficiency benchmarking against the Igaro D1 because these companies wont release performance figures. If you'd be happy to send yours to England I'l return it within a week along with a free Igaro D1.

Required: Sinewave Revolution, B&W USB Werk, Tout Terrain Plug

  • I've got a sinewave rev you can use? It has been used for a few miles already though, so not brand new. Not that that'll make much difference.

Be interested to know the figures.

  • I have a PlugIII not doing much at the moment.

  • Brill, send me an email: ac at igaro dot com

    (used is fine)

  • It would be really interesting if you put up a full comparison of all of those (electronics-wise) along with the original data. These devices have been a long running debate on here!

  • @ad441 this might be of interest for your Werk?

  • A possible solution to mounting the unit near the headset would be with one of these velo-orange bell attatchment headset spacers

  • Thanks @mustardbeak. Yes, I've got a USB Werk which I'd be happy for you to use. Pm me if you still need one.
(providing I get it back before I get it back in advance of 2nd week in May when I'll be needing reliable USB charging for Bryan Chapman audax).

  • Hi all, I'm cutting it close with other matters at the moment, I'll PM you lot after June 6th when I'll be in a better position to benchmark them quickly, but that's the 'big three' covered.

    Regards, Andrew

  • Anyone seen this Alpkit/LoveMud dynamo?

Looks very like an SP, which I've definitely seen branded as Exposure and a few other things I think too.

The price is very good, too good almost. CRC have the non disc version of the 'Exposure' hub for £75, a pucker SP is around £95from SJS, £80-odd from ebay, the Love Mud is £59!

I was going to go for this Alfine wheel from ebay which works out about £95 shipped but if the Love Mud is fundamentally an SP it should be better sealed and a bit more efficient no?

  • There was some discussion on another forum about the Alpkit thing, consensus seemed to be that the design appeared to be heavily borrowed from SP, but it's not a rebrand. Three main points seemed to be it's heavier, made in China not Taiwan and something else I can't remember... The USB cable is a bit of a gimmick, probably lead to a bunch of exploded phones by people who don't read the instructions or understand electricity.

Regardless of their product "design" ethic, their customer service always used to be good (not heard anything to suggest that's changed...) so you'd probably be ok if you do run into any problems.

  • Looks like KT's new dynamo (weights are pretty similar - 415-422g). No surprises that it looks very similar to an SP as they used to make the hubshells for SP. These are pretty much brand new (were showing them at Taipei show) so probably not been all that roadtested yet.

  • Cheers, probably not too interested in something that's pretty new to market.

I've gone for the Alfine, seems like the Shimano dynamos are not the sexiest but are quite reliable.

I'm thinking B&M IQ Cyo premium front and Supernova E3 rear lights now.
