The BMW only have 500 miles on it so far, so not sure it'll be staying at 50mpg or get a bit better over time.
It just that they don't need that much power anymore, and would be happy to gain better mpg and lose a fair chunk of performance, and would be cheaper to remap the chip than to sell it and buy another car, especially when they had the Toyota since new.
For a diesel engine it is pretty appalling when the BMW is not only quicker, cheaper to tax (122g/km) and insured, but managed a smug above 50mpg.
So effectively the Toyota is expensive in every sense! (Abet last forever with no issues for 75,000 miles).
